Re: NBA 2018

I stayed up to watch this stupid game hoping Svi would get two minutes. Nope.

Eh. It’s pretty clear from the FIBA stuff (among other things) that Grimes is very much a Self guy.

Re: Shoe money trial

Plus it's not like the FBI is required to share or turnover the evidence to the NCAA... they may be stuck using the same court room info that we already know....which may be enough if that's the route the want to go. The KT stuff if turned over probably could be classified of lack of institutional ...

Re: Shoe money trial

There are college professors earning millions or close to millions of dollars a year. The highest paid academic in the University of Kansas system is a cardiologist at KU Med who earns a little over half a million per year. The highest paid person who looks like they have some sort of teaching-adja...

Re: G-League -To help eliminate shoe trials?

I think it's fantastic. No more Prestons and Cliffs. More Devontes and Masons. I would not confidently say that a single player at KU under Roy or Bill that played in the NBA would have passed the true amateur test. I think you're incredibly naive if you think the G League thing threatens only &quo...

Re: The top 100 (and one) best players for the 2018-19 season

The problem is that it's not hard to gameplan for Doke; it's nearly impossible to gameplan for a guy like Grimes. Of course, gameplanning for Doke means opening up soft spots elsewhere (or burning fouls). I could very much see a scenario unfolding often this year where Doke is pulled from foul 5 unt...

Re: G-League -To help eliminate shoe trials?

I've seen that sentiment a few different places. A few thoughts: 1. I don't think "you'll get paid [to go to college], too" will hold true for a few years at least. I think the investigation/trials will certainly have a chilling effect on that. 2. I agree that, in pretty much every way bes...

Re: Shoe money trial

Just a thought experiment:

If, on November 5, the four Champions Classic coaches (just so we're on the same page: K, Cal, Izzo and Self) released a statement saying all net revenue from the event was going to be divided among their players...what would happen?

Re: Shoe money trial

Cal is a carnival barker and annoying as hell, but he's also, in a very important way, perhaps the most honest voice in the sport. (I also note that if, say, Bill and Cal held a joint presser to say this shit needs to be fixed, and players need to be able to monetize name/image/likeness, it would ha...

Re: Shoe money trial

If Cal is verified scum because he's been complicit in or aware of players getting improper benefits over the years then sadly our coach is going to be getting labeled scum as well....because as much as some of you hate Calipari he and Self seem to have a lot in common. Personally I don't think Sel...

Re: G-League -To help eliminate shoe trials?

Nice fucking job, NCAA. Assuming there's one slot per G League team for this program, you've just chased about a quarter of the top-100 players every single year out of college basketball.

Re: Shoe money trial

The only surprise is it took this long. College basketball is well down the path of squandering its enormous built-in advantages in service of people who, for financial reasons or otherwise, dribble piss down their leg at the notion of the players getting some approximation of what they're worth. It...

Re: Shoe money trial

No. Well, yes. Yes, something like the Olympic model would be easy to implement and monitor, and would go a very long way toward squeezing out the most rotten parts of the system. It is fine for you to have a personal distaste for this. But, at some point you will need to realize that distaste trul...

It's just a preferred route to tackle the issue.
One side DOES have obvious and easy solutions, though.

If I understand pwhit's position, the taint is in the presence of the money at all; pwhit can't abide by the underground money being given to players above board (and reported and taxed etc.).

I can't go back in time and take the joy out of watching those games but now at this moment, yea, for sure. There's a black eye. If it's found out that those involved at Kansas were responsible with getting him and his people tens of thousands of dollars, then absolutely, it's not as good a season....

Eh, I think Grimes will be really good. Much closer to Josh Jackson than Kelly Oubre. Freshman Henry or Rush, but a better ballhandler/passer, seems right.

I think Doke will be more impactful than his ranking says. I also think he'd go for like 26/10 for a lot of other schools.

Re: Shoe money trial

We've had this argument. Unfortunately (fortunately) Vega deleted that massive thread. I don't want the focus of college basketball athletes to be contracts, deals, endorsements. And it doesn't need to be. Fans follow schools not individual players. We don't need the top 50 players every year to st...
