Re: The Travel Thread
Has anyone flown out of LaGuardia recently? Last time I was there, a little over two years ago, it was so f****d up by construction that it took 45 minutes to go less than a mile in a hotel shuttle to the terminal.

Re: The Travel Thread
Anyone have good Hawaii advice? Specifically, Mrs. Fish and I are locked into arriving in Honolulu on a Friday night and leaving on a Wednesday. Can't change either of those things. No set plans otherwise. If you have a rental car, the Pali Highway is a spectacularly scenic drive. There’s a tunnel ...

Some random travel tips: — If you’ve flown into New Orleans, when you’re leaving get to the airport early enough to try the red beans and rice at Dooky Chase restaurant, outside of security near concourse B. Good stuff. — If you’re staying more than a week someplace, and you don’t want to pay higher...

Very long article, but worth it. The gist of it is paleontologist from KU makes what may be the greatest find in history. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/04/08/the-day-the-dinosaurs-died Edited to add: Looks like he found fossils from the exact day that the asteroid hit that took out the din...

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/16/style/snowplow-parenting-scandal.html That's some rhetorical crap right there. Anecdotes and using statistics to suggest causation when there's actually no evidence of it. Here's an anecdote. I had helicopter parents. I am still doing fine as an adult on my own. I...

Meanwhile, in other news, a Rolling Stone reporter, writing in The New Yorker, tells what his experience was like when he worked at the SPLC. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-reckoning-of-morris-dees-and-the-southern-poverty-law-center (Hint: past history not a sign of what it had become.)

If you have the right skills, instead of a degree in “Studies,” and you’re willing to go where the jobs are, you can make out quite well.

I think it’s less that Dedric is emotionless than that he normally doesn’t show his emotions. This is worth reading. https://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12/university-of-kansas/article228347559.html From that story I wouldn’t be surprised if Dedric decided to stay another year, though I wo...

And a down year for KU is not continuing all-time record conference streak, not getting to the Sweet 16, but continuing an all-time record consecutive years in the tournament, and being a 4 seed or higher for 19 years straight.

I remember the chickenpox party I went to as a kindergartner because that was where I was also exposed to the game “doctor.” If you haven’t reached age 50 yet, get vaccinated for shingles when you do. Please do. Shingles is no joke. It can be torture. Half of people who reach age 85 have had at lea...

So, CDC says there are ~10,500 deaths annually in the US caused by car crashes involving alcohol. CDC says that before the chickenpox vaccine, there were 105 chickenpox deaths in the US. Why don’t we have breathalyzers to start cars? Why do we even allow people to drive cars (40k deaths per year)? ...

Re: Vaccinations
I can only wish that all of those “parents” get a serious case of shingles as they get older, because that’s going to happen to a lot of their kids. I had chickenpox almost 40 years before there was a vaccine for it.
