Re: Shoe money trial

The only surprise is it took this long. College basketball is well down the path of squandering its enormous built-in advantages in service of people who, for financial reasons or otherwise, dribble piss down their leg at the notion of the players getting some approximation of what they're worth. It...

Re: Shoe money trial

No. Well, yes. Yes, something like the Olympic model would be easy to implement and monitor, and would go a very long way toward squeezing out the most rotten parts of the system. It is fine for you to have a personal distaste for this. But, at some point you will need to realize that distaste trul...

It's just a preferred route to tackle the issue.
One side DOES have obvious and easy solutions, though.

If I understand pwhit's position, the taint is in the presence of the money at all; pwhit can't abide by the underground money being given to players above board (and reported and taxed etc.).

Re: Shoe money trial

I can't go back in time and take the joy out of watching those games but now at this moment, yea, for sure. There's a black eye. If it's found out that those involved at Kansas were responsible with getting him and his people tens of thousands of dollars, then absolutely, it's not as good a season....

Re: The top 100 (and one) best players for the 2018-19 season

Eh, I think Grimes will be really good. Much closer to Josh Jackson than Kelly Oubre. Freshman Henry or Rush, but a better ballhandler/passer, seems right.

I think Doke will be more impactful than his ranking says. I also think he'd go for like 26/10 for a lot of other schools.

Re: Shoe money trial

We've had this argument. Unfortunately (fortunately) Vega deleted that massive thread. I don't want the focus of college basketball athletes to be contracts, deals, endorsements. And it doesn't need to be. Fans follow schools not individual players. We don't need the top 50 players every year to st...

Re: Shoe money trial

Nike and Adidas sre investing in the opportunity to represent these kids omce they go pro. Very little has to do with college choice. Its all about hetting the hooks in early in pitential profit cows. I don't know about that. The Adidas guy said "what's best for Adidas" is these top Adida...

Sure it does. You take the position that there's something fundamentally different about a kid with a $4 million trust fund from his parents than a kid with $4 million in the bank as a draft bonus.

Re: Shoe money trial

I know you struggle with it. We just don't see things the same way. I prefer to keep money out of college basketball as best we can and you don't care. Again, you'd prefer KC Phogushers and i'd prefer Western Hutchinson's CC Birds. Ok. So college basketball should be more accessible for rich kids t...

Re: Shoe money trial

No absolutely not....but I also think Duke may not have a coach talking about it explicitly in a text like dumbass KT. Maybe, maybe not. Certainly were I a defendant in one of these cases, I'd fight like hell to introduce evidence of a bidding war (in that, if there's a bidding war, then there's no...

Re: Shoe money trial

No doubt. There definitely are. I just mean that K and Roy wouldn't be coming out making these bold statements if they thought there was a chance they'd have a text message out there like Selfs or KTs....otherwise they're going to look foolish if they're saying this and there is evidence that they ...

Re: Shoe money trial

I would be fine with this as well as long as the player wasn't getting paid ( or immediately paid ) and wasn't working with an agent during the school year. In your opinion, should Kyler Murray not be allowed to play football for Oklahoma this year? Should the player allowed to have received a draf...

Re: Shoe money trial

But seriously, those guys are just setting the stage for what's to come. They must know they're not going to pop up on a stupid text message string. Nike probably just does this better than Adidas (like everything else). So they're just preemptively setting the narrative that they didn't know becau...

Re: Pre-season Big12 awards

I would bet on both these things happening:

1. Doke will have a much better year; and

2. Konate will have a highlight block on Doke.

It won't eliminate this but it sure will help.
Eliminate it, and/or look to hockey for an example of how a player can be drafted (and his rights retained) but still develop in college.
