Re: The Travel Thread

When the pronunciation of a place name is not simply a matter of local accent, such as New Orleans, I've learned to listen to local radio and tv stations to learn how to pronounce the name of a place in the United States. Worcestor, Massachusetts, is pronounced "Wooster" (short oo as in &q...

Re: The Great Outdoors

shit! also, I meant to comment re: what if the bear has cubs... I was watching this thing on feral pigs in the southeast. Apparently the best approach is to set traps big enough to capture the entire sounder, cuz they're so efficient at reproducing, and cuz just one still fucks things up. Anywho, s...

Re: The Travel Thread

Have to go to San Francisco in in a couple of weeks on business, where residents can get fined over $300 for not cleaning up their dog’s poop, but where people are allowed to take a dump on the sidewalks. It’s also where plastic straws are outlawed, but where people leaving plastic hypodermic needle...

Re: Royals

Beginning with the game against New York in which Mondesi ended his road batting slump, and including all the games since through the Tampa Bay series, Mondesi has had 28 at bats and 8 hits. That’s a .350 average since ending the slump, and all of it on the road.

Re: The Travel Thread

Not Gutter’s intention at all, which was nice, by the way, but just looking at the images in that video, I can’t help but wonder if youngsters who’ve never really been away from city lights think that that’s how the night sky looks to the naked eye.

Re: Royals

Well, at least Mondesi finally ended his road slump, so maybe now he can get his overall average up to his .353 home average. The bullpen is starting to look better now, too, so I think the outlook for the season is on the upswing.

Re: The Travel Thread

On a clear night in the summer and away from city lights, especially if you’re in the mountains, try this: lie on your back outdoors and look at the Milky Way with a pair of binoculars. For the purpose it’s better than using a telescope. To the naked eye the Milky Way looks like a band of thin high-...

Rush was supposed to be.
The fact that he wasn’t helped the team to a title.

Also US-14 in the Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming between I-90 and Cody. At least there were no places to stop there 40 years ago.

Great if you can get a connection, 15 miles out of town, good enough to stream without way too much buffering. Cable cut a long time ago. Have satellite. Very hard to trust Amazon devices and Google, or the entire “internet of things”, on privacy issues.

Great scenery you can’t stop to look at. —San Francisco from the westbound Bay Bridge at night. —Pittsburgh from northbound I-279 bridge just after exiting the tunnel going towards downtown. —Los Angeles at sunrise after rain has cleared the air the day or night before, from “the 110” (I-110) northb...

This sucks: ESPN+ deal

For those of us who’ve been able to watch every game on tv, except the exhibition games, this is not good news. Four nonconference games will be streaming only this next season. (I don’t remember if the exhibition games were broadcast this last year.) https://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12...

Re: Guns Up

Though I respect Tech’s team and coach, their fan base proved they are trash when they turned over cars and rioted after winning in the Elite Eight. P*sses me off whenever I see that happen. Every student involved should spend time in jail, and each one should be forced to pay full price restitution...

Here’s a good story about how his time in Lawrence changed KJ’s mind about getting a degree and about life after basketball.

Re: The Travel Thread

Anyone have good Hawaii advice? Specifically, Mrs. Fish and I are locked into arriving in Honolulu on a Friday night and leaving on a Wednesday. Can't change either of those things. No set plans otherwise. If you have a rental car, the Pali Highway is a spectacularly scenic drive. There’s a tunnel ...
