What was your favorite bar in Lawrence?

Post by kubandalum »

What was your favorite bar while you were in Lawrence?

My favorites were the Bierstube (in the basement of the ‘Hawk), and Louise’s.

Some of you may not be old enough to remember 3.2% beer. Since the legal definition for alcohol content was different for 3-2 beer than other beer — one was measured by weight and the other by volume — 3-2 was really only slightly less alcoholic than regular beer. It was legal for 18-year-olds, and all the bars thrived. What happened when the law changed?

I prob hung out at Harbor Lights the most. Laid back, perhaps the least frattiest, and to this day I can still go in and see folks I know.

Well, okay, I hung out at Phoggy Dog the most because it was closest to my place on ousdahl plus 3 dollar pitchers on Wednesday’s, but I think it since closed.

Gammons when jacked up.
The Wheel when wanting to pick up girls.
Cogburns when wanting to drink shitty beer and listen to shitty music.
The Hatter to hang out.

I had a different bar for every night by senior year. A big reason I was smart not to choose grad school at KU!

I seem to remember 90 cent pitchers at the ‘Hawk on Fridays. We had a guy in the dorm who drove what had once been a mail truck, complete with steering wheel on the right side. He knew a beer distributor, and he could get us kegs with gas taps. The dorm reserved the roller rink for keg parties a couple of times.

Brewhawk lasted about two years - 2003 and 2004.
There was/is a law that new establishments around Mass have to make 55 percent of their income off food sales.
It was clear from the start that wasn't going to happen - there were three dollar pitchers on Friday and Saturday nights. They had dollar jello shots. It was a shit show.

Not long after they opened, the city commish came after them and so then they fought back with what I thought was a genius move ( it didn't work, it wasn't enough apparently ). You had a 3 dollar cover to get in. Your 3 dollars got you 3 tickets. A ticket was worth one dollar towards food items. Pizzas were 9 dollars.

Benchwarmers on 23rd. I used to bartend (serve beer mostly) there around 1994.

I got Johnny's on both lists.
Good spot - just a little out of the way.
JetLag coulda been a contender. I also like Wayne N Larry's and Henry T's ( though they are kinda more restaurant than bar ). But proximity to Mass is key.

That's odd. I thought I used to see you at the Jet Lag as I passed by?
