Different strokes. Montana sounds awful to me. But, you could certainly pay me to live a lot of places.

I'd even trade Colorado for an equally tourist-y state that offers something different than mountains because you can really get all of that stuff in CA.

I'll take CA and HI and forgo ever stepping foot in the other 48.
I know that I keep beating the some drum here, but, man, you couldn't pay me enough to live in California.
I'm curious as to why you dislike California.
I dont like people. I dont like crowded beaches. I dont like san fran or LA or sactown or stockton or modesto etc. I like seasons. Plus. Lobster lives there.

The cool thing about California though is, everything you just described is only a small part of California.

Montana is great. But neither Great Lakes M state, nor Mississippi nor Maine, can bridge the beach/ocean gap.

Not picking on Montana, it has just been mentioned a lot.

As has California. But, it's essentially it's own country. Anyone can find a spot for them somewhere in California. All of the reasons people like Montana has 0 appeal to me.

Doesn't seem like there are a lot of people in LA, they are all in cars driving around.

If you think California beaches are crowded then you haven’t been to California. Or if you believe we don’t have seasons - you just don’t know where to be.

I’ve lived here for almost 23 years and I know exactly where the uncrowded beaches are: they’re not the 5-6 crowded beaches everyone is talking about. Often you can go to a beach and there are maybe 5 people there.

The biggest reason I dislike our local beaches is that you can only swim in the ocean about two months (if that) in a year without a wetsuit. Down south is a bit better.

I don’t like Stockton or Modesto either but as ousie said there’s a lot more to California.

Ive been to Cali many times. My sister lived in San Fran for 4 years, Its fine, just not my thing. My brother in law and I went to one of those hidden beaches to surf. It was great and perfect at 5am.....

San diego isnt bad, san Clemente isnt bad. The corridor between south long beach and north san diego is tolerable but I would never want to live there.

If I had to Id say drop my off in Yosemite and Ill be good.

All valid reasons.

I don't like people either. Not easy to ignore people in the cities but there are some desolate places in California where you wouldn't have to deal with people.
I don't like crowded beaches. No doubt plenty of crowded beaches - but also plenty of not crowded beaches too.
I do like the majority of SF and LA but there are so many things/parts to take in to account when you like or dislike a city. I have little interest in Sacramento. Stockton and Modesto are fine - for me.
I like seasons too but I prefer nice weather 9/10/11/12 months of the year instead of 4 months of the year.
Plenty of Lobsters in California but the funny thing is I tend to find the majority of NATIVE Californians to be good people who get a bad rap. It's usually the transplants who are the assholes. So many different types of people with so many different ways of living throughout the state. Keeps it interesting to/for me.

To answer a couple of things brought up.

1. N’s. North Carolina. Very diverse state geographically as well, oceans, mountains, etc. Also Duke, Roiboi, and it’s in the South, so blech.

2. Pdub- Mississippi. Drive along Mississippi is worth doing. And you could drive to casinos. On gulf. But yeah, it’s in the South, so blech.

3. I’ve never been to Maine. One of just a few I’ve missed. Can I sleep on your couch if tdub isn’t there?

It's not necessarily the beach, it's the weather near the ocean.

Yosemite is one of my most favorite places on earth. We go there at least three or four times a year. Again if you like crowds you can hang around Curry Village or the Yosemite Lodge parking lot or the first half a mile of the Must Trail.

Otherwise there are plenty of places with hardly anyone around. We always joke that the number of people in any point in Yosemite is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the parking lot (Mist Trail excepted).

SF has its pluses and minuses. The description you have for the stretch between Long Beach and San Diego is repeated in many stretches. In fact except for a few beaches the entire coast from Ocean Beach in SF to Pismo Beach is basically desolate.

I'm not a fan of beaches. The rest of my family love them. I usually turn the looose and find a beer bar to hang out in.

Just something about the draw of the ocean—it’s all coastal for me now.

Master of the obvious says, there are major differences between some/many/most beaches.
I have been to disgusting beaches and I have been to what I feel are some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.
Anyone who can't find a beach that they could take a lot of pleasure in being in/at - I feel sorry for that person.

Anyways, on to the questions of the day for 7/8/20....
