Prom? THOSE kids went to prom? With whom? Their sisters?
As far as their punishment - Other than being stupid/ignorant, I'm not sure what the crime is/was that they committed and/or the rule they broke.

The crime of not being woke. Punishment must be swift, certain, and severe. How will these kids learn if we don't kill them?

almost every person is a "decent person." problem today is, being a decent person isn't good enough. you will be shamed or cancelled for being a "decent person."

I think we learn to be a decent person, usually by making mistakes and being allowed to redeem ourselves through changed behavior. Nobody is born decent or kind or taking other people into consideration. They have to be taught. The referenced incident has the potential to be a great learning opportunity for those young men, but, based on what was printed in the article, it will likely end up being the opposite.

I think the whole woke movement has metastasized beyond an opportunity to consider another person's perspective and act in a kinder, more considerate way moving forward, into a monstrous conflagration of hatred, retribution, and violence. That's the sort of thing that prompts people to stay entrenched in their old beliefs, not change them.

lol at the anti-woke sentiment

“wokeness” is no more than seeing someone else’s perspective and being compassionate and empathetic towards their plights, imo

those that demonize “being woke” are often the ones that are set in their ways...hence the right’s backlash and “make america great again”

they don’t want a different america that is great, or even greater...they want to go back to a time when they didn’t have to worry about holding racist/sexist/misogynistic views, back to a time when those views were more widely accepted

When groupthink took over the American psyche. We must all assimilate, think the same, have the same thresholds of tolerance and acceptance and same ideas for life or we are assholes.

This is a general statement not specific to these kids.

The real punishment for these kids is the fact that the internet never forgets. This poor choice will follow them around and haunt them for years to come....even if they learn and grow from it (which, should bw the goal right?).

"Wokeness" is making sure everyone else knows how much you care and how compassionate and progressive you are....whether you are or not. BEING those things without fanfare is what makes good humans.

the groupthink issue is definitely a problem, as evidenced by the data on the echo-chambers associated with viewership of tv news stations

i’d argue that the opposite is also problematic. the idea that every opinion is valid and worthy of consideration is just as damaging

imo, the phenomena of wokeness and cancel culture are nothing new...they’re just a continuance of the same dialogue that has always happened, only now they’re amplified by media (social and otherwise). the backlash towards them now is really no different from the backlash against political correctness in 90’s and early 2000s

sure, the reaction can be knee-jerk and swing the pendulum too far, but the pendulum does swing back and ultimate result is that our society changes the definition of what is acceptable behavior and speech

this we can agree on

it’s unfortunate that it IS a reflection of reality in too many people’s minds

Wokeness also means automatically believing and acting on the worst possible view of everyone who does not act the way I want them to in any given moment.

If you are a silly, impulsive, misguided (read: typical) high school boy who goes along with his friends and wears a T-shirt in a photo that offends the wrong people, you are the lowest form of life on Earth and deserve to pay for it for the rest of your miserable existence.

My greatest hope is that I am never defined by my worst decisions and most ignorant statements in life. Seems like we all deserve to be afforded a measure of grace sufficient to allow for growth and change.
