the freedom to play G.I. Joe, basically, outweighs the freedom to live, go to school, go to the store, etc. without fear of being murdered

And again - just so we're being 100% clear - no serious person is seeking a comprehensive ban on guns.

We just keep getting told, over and over again, some combination of: (1) the Second Amendment guarantees a present-day right to buy, own and use assault rifles, (2) there would not actually be any utility to "contracting" otherwise (by our elected representatives codifying restrictions on the buying, owning and using of assault rifles).

2) Dems call for restrictions on the ability of disturbed people with ill intentions to not be able to buy AR15s and high capacity magazines so easily
3) GOPs scream about Dems trying to take away their guns/ban all gun sales
4) Conversation dissolves into stupidity
5) Repeat steps 1-4 every few weeks for what seems like it will be the rest of eternity

One of the truly confounding things is that 1/3 of the country more or less sees gun laws as PERMISSION structures: who am I allowed to shoot, when, and with what.

Right. The number one sited reason for owning a firearm is personal protection. Which to me seems reasonable. But that's because I assume that personal protection means self defense, like literally, someone is trying to kill you and you use the weapon as a last resort. But then you find out that personal protection might mean protecting someone else's property as a justifiable reason to kill someone and then you realize not everyone is having the same conversation.

Yeah. The failure to pass laws that clarify that you don’t get to use self-defense as an affirmative defense if you put yourself into the situation…is quite a tell!

It depends on whether we will have yet reached the Magical Gun Equilibrium (being that special state of balance where there are exactly the right number of guns, such that gun violence is no more).
