Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

The God damn evil "cabal of elites" strikes again!
If true (I'm not saying it is or is not) of course they would want it covered up - and "not stopped".
So why aren't people who are not the "cabal of elites" exposing the people who are involved?
Is it fear of repercussions? Or lack of evidence? Or.....?????
They are.

Of course this just isn’t an accurate portrayal of what’s happening here, in this discussion. You keep going back to the well on this, and it’s dry.

It can be - and very much IS - true at the same time that:

1 - child sex trafficking is very real, and very bad; and

2 - the movie being discussed here is, perhaps (or perhaps not) among other things, an exaggerated, scarifying grift that has very real, and very bad side effects.
And, again I ask, what “very bad side effects”? Specifically.
I have already answered specifically:

What harm can come of it? A very real problem is being brought into the public eye and an organization that does a lot of good is benefiting from it. The only complaints I have seen seem to be that there is some perceived level of hyperbole, which is a subjective criticism.
Lots and lots of harm can come from inducing moral panics by hyperbolic fear porn.

* Scarce law enforcement and prosecutorial resources can be used inefficiently.
* Real victims can be retraumatized over and over again.
* Rubes can become victims of grift.
* The media's attention can be diverted away from other areas worthy of reporting and analysis.
* Tax fraud can be perpetrated on all of us through inappropriate 501(c)(3) and like treatment.
* Rubes can be encouraged to pursue vigilante justice (in which they endanger themselves and others).

And so on.
And I was very specific that you were engaging in the kind of paternalistic overreach that smacks of false superiority and is invalid. And I'd say that even if you didn't refer to "rubes" in your points.

If you're offended by "rube," go ahead and respond to this:

* Scarce law enforcement and prosecutorial resources can be used inefficiently.
* Real victims can be retraumatized over and over again.
* People vulnerable to conspiracy theories can become victims of grift.
* The media's attention can be diverted away from other areas worthy of reporting and analysis.
* Tax fraud can be perpetrated on all of us through inappropriate 501(c)(3) and like treatment.
* People vulnerable to conspiracy theories can be encouraged to pursue vigilante justice (in which they endanger themselves and others).

I agree that there is a ring of wealthy pedophiles world wide that assaults children who have been trafficked for that express purpose We just disagree on the scope of who it involves.

why are the righties being so obstinate and dismissive of the legitimate questions about the motivations of its creators?
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

There are probably a dozen posts in the thread stating that it is not the topic of the movie itself that is the source of some concern with details as to what is the concern. For a person who talks passionately and at length about the lack of civil discourse or respect for the opinions of others it's frustrating that you cinrinually make zero effort to listen to the points made by others in a conversation.

Because it is?

Let me help.

Take the sentence "A movie that exposes pedophilia and child sex trafficking is controversial."

For that sentence to be TRUE, the "that exposes pedophilia and child sex trafficking" part is irrelevant. All that matters is whether the movie is or is not controversial.

Which it is!

And it is not controversial because Team R says pedophilia is bad and Team D says pedophilia is good. No one in this thread is saying pedophilia is good!

It's controversial because of the motivations of those who made it, the motivations of those who promote it, and the very real, real-life consequences that result from people like you putting this issue in a microwave, heating it up to the surface of the sun, and then gushing the plasma all over the damn place!

Because the rubes aren’t allowed to be passionate about causes. We aren’t intelligent enough to be trusted not to be naughty.

BINGO!

"A MOVIE"

I'll only speak for myself but my guess is others agree that IT'S THE MOVIE and many things about it that I find "controversial". Not so much the subject of the movie.

* EDIT
Sorry, I read fish's post after I wrote mine. He explained it well. Better than me at least.
