The sand dunes are taller than you think they are going to be when first seen from a distance. You can see them from 40-50 miles away. The San Luis Valley is very flat. There aren't many places in the US where you can see a 7000 foot vertical uplift. There is a string of 14ers that forms the eastern edge of the valley that runs 60 miles north to south. At the base of them is 900 tall sand dunes. It isn't until you drive up to the dunes that you realize how tall they are because they are dwarfed by the mountains in the background.

Tres leches cake can be kind like that.

It feels like I haven't had a vacation since before covid or maybe longer. I am so looking forward to getting to Colorado.
I saw the sand dunes during geology fiend camp (uh, >30 years ago). My daughter has never seen Colorado. I haven't told her that she can surf the sand dunes.
