Grimes = Malik Newman 2.0

Hm.
In terms of just not being happy with where he preformed based on expectations?
Newman had a very good year at KU - do we think Grimes has 30 something points in a Elite Eight game?

Newman was shorter, more athletic, and a natural scorer who just needed to get going.

Grimes taller, doughier, and thinks he’s a point even though he doesn’t seem to have a feel for either guard position

Both top 10 recruits who under-performed, declared for the draft, found out they weren't good enough, and decided to pull out and transfer.

There are loose parallels, but give me Newman's frosh year over Grimes's any day of the week. Newman's outlook was rosier at the same point.

Grimes goes to the top of the list of most disappointing high-level recruits in Self's tenure.

If BofH was picking, Rio Adams would be # 1.

Agreed.
I'm not saying confidently that he would have lost his spot but the threat was there - and I don't think it would have crushed his stock if it had happened but maybe in his mind, it would have.
I do suspect self made him some promises of playing time coming in...that was more apparent with grimes than anyone I've seen. It wouldn't surprise me that self revoked that promise going forward and grimes loosing that safety net was a factor here.
I only came to kick some ass...

Rock the fucking house and kick some ass.

Indeed. Would tend to agree. Plus, hard to blame all of your problems on the system and the coach to NBA teams and then go back to the same system....kinds forced his own hand. Or daddy did maybe.

pdub wrote: Thu May 30, 2019 7:45 am It's possible that Grimes saw the rise of Ochai, knew that Garrett would be an upperclassman and healthy and Dotson had secured the point guard role.

Coming off the bench wouldn't necessarily be a disaster but the threat of that might have been too much for him to handle.

He had all the opportunity to claim a spot. The system might not be his exact fit but other players have worked in the system before and he got plenty of clock.

If I'm a NBA GM/decision maker, I look at this and think, 'will he give up later if things don't work out immediately?'
He hit a wall his freshman year, but there's no reason he couldn't have worked through it and remained a starter. He's still got a lot of potential and I wish players would not get so down on themselves because their freshman year wasn't great. We've had several guys that had weak freshman years go on and become very good NBA players.

Selden was a heralded recruit, struggled some his first two years, and then had a great junior year.
And he's PhD's favorite player so look at him now.

I thought his freshman year was not bad, especially considering he was in the shadow of Wiggins and Embiid. He was a pretty modest personality, which is not bad at all, but we didn't see the assertive Selden until his junior year.

Edit: oh wait, was that his sophomore year when Wiggins and Embiid were here?

Difference though, was Adams even a top 100 recruit? Let alone a top 10.

As far as Grimes being #1 on the most disappointing high level recruits, I wouldn't even have him top 5 on that list.
