oh man. LOTS of updates lately, many of which are highlarious.

But for now let’s go with this one:

So my assistant manager is leaving.

You know, the department’s second in command, with the third in command effectively being me...

so I'm on interview number 3 (!!!) with this new gig. Each meeting thus far has lasted at least an hour and a half, so I'm pretty sure they like me.

but to be honest, I don't really plan to leave my current situation...that is, unless, the new gig gives me some numbers that I don't expect them to give.

So I guess my questions for you guys today are:

- how do I use an offer from a new employer as leverage to get more out of my current one?
(did I already ask that?)

- what's the appropriate and professional way to high-ball? Do I wait for them to blink (e.g. make them throw a number out there first, then say I'm hoping for more), or do I just come out strong with a big number myself?

You dont use it as leverage. Seen many people end up high and dry without a job at either place for playing that game.

You have a strong number in mind and IF they ask your opinion you give it to them.

I'm not much of a fly fisherman tho. But would love to learn.

And why ain't I catching anything? Dont y'all stock these creeks? I promised my boy we have a good trophy picture for him to show his friends. Paying good money for this guide trip why ain't y'all letting me catch fish?

I'm sorry, sir. It would help if you stopped posturing as if you know more than the guide and just accept a little instruction already.

I know, I know, you caught a big ol' bucketmouth bass at Lake Fork Reservoir one time, so that pretty much makes you an expert, but that still doesn't make it okay for your kid to keep throwing rocks in the water we're trying to fish.

Now if you'll excuse me, your kid just tried to wade into the deepest hole in the creek again, and this time he went in over his head, so I'm gonna go chase him as he floats downstream. Here, take the truck keys and go fire up the heater, there's some towels in the back seat.

oh, and by the way, have y'all considered just sticking to zip line tours?

Scuse me? I got a big one...no dammit you scared him with yer yammering. Go untangle me off that branch. Got any dynamite like pappy used to? And what's your problem.. ziplines? You like your paycheck?. God made Texas and Texans made Colorado...remember that boy.

big day!

so lots to discuss, but let's focus on this little nugget:

so I hear the assistant manager job had finally been posted, though no none had said a thing to me about it. I talk to this chick from work (oh yeah, we have), who is among the few who ever got promoted there. She asks if I'm going to apply. I say I'm going to ask the manager if she wants me to apply and go from there. The chick replies, "yeah, the (female) assistant GM already pulled me aside and asked me if I want the position. No one has asked you?"

nope.

"well that's not surprising. Both the manager and assistant GM are way sexist, and don't like promoting dudes."

so then!

I meet with the manager, which goes something like this:

hey just following up about that Head Guide position you and the assistant GM said you were putting together for me, per our last several weeks and months of meetings. Any updates?

"no ousdahl, no updates yet, you'll just have to be patient."

well I've been patient for months now, and hope to hear something soon. btw, I also heard the assistant manager gig has been posted. How would you feel about me playing a bigger role for you?

"oh, well I'm encouraging all interested staffers to apply."

oookay, but how would you feel about me playing a bigger role for you?

"I'm encouraging all interested staffers to apply."

okay, pretty sure I read you loud and clear. BTW I'm on my third round of interviews at our rival resort across the county, and just got an email from the GM asking me to call him. So last question: if I quit my full time status here can I still guide on my days off at another place?

"whoa! uhhh...I suppose?! but for real ROUND THREE?! What do you think you're gonna do?!?!?!"

Well if they offer then I'm at least gonna consider it.

*managerial deer in the headlights lol*

anywho, so if you wanted to confirm the terms of that new position, I'd appreciate you letting me know sooner than later. k thaaaanks!
