Ooh, chess movie. I miss my chess days. Except for my last tournament. Twas the Kansas state chess championship. I tied with some dude who had just moved to the state allegedly. To break the tie, we played speed chess. I think they made up that as the tie breaker on the spot. I am not great at thinking fast and lost. So I ended up second in the state. What a stupid way to break a tie. Just give us time to play a 30 minute game or something. It's the fucking state championship, and blitz is not chess.

At least my team won the championship all 4 years I was there. I have the trophy that they let the team keep if you win 3 in a row. We didn't give it to our school because they refused to pay our tournament fees.

Watching Hikack on Appletv. 4 of 7 episodes out, I’m enjoying so far.

What I’m focusing on, though, is t the show. It’s the fact that more and more, streaming services are releasing programs one episode at a time.

So, they changed the way we watch television, then revert back to the way we watched television.

Of course, it’s to prolong interest, and subscriptions, for those who would binge watch a show then cancel after whatever timeframe that took.

It’s lol and so ‘Murica that the allure of something new and more awesome (streaming) changed our behavior. And now that we are hooked, they’ve employed a tried and true method to change the psychology and get our behavior back to where it was.

Sigh.

That series gave me flashbacks. My parents were Gothard people. I grew up with the books in my house and getting the ever-loving crap beat out of me for the most minor of infractions. My Mom frequently talked about how "we have to break your will for your own good." It is definitely why I have never used corporal punishment on my kids and why I focused so much more on building relationships with them and trying to shape their character rather than dictating it. The funny thing is, I told my parents they should watch the series, and after doing so, they were like "I can't believe we did all of those things. What were we thinking?"

nostalgic awesomeness
Watch the ESPN E:60 version when you get a chance. I watched both the Netflix and ESPN versions, and they kind of fill in blanks for one another. One fascinating thing the Netflix version focused on was how all of the major players in the story did what they did because of a bad homelife growing up. Validates a lot of what I have been telling people over the years.

you've been telling people if their home life was bad enough they could become a steroid superfreak badass with a name like Lazer or Nitro?!

Hey - don’t steal my schtick! That’s several hundred dollars’ worth of therapeutic insight right there.

This is the movie thread too?

The Menu. My favorite new movie I have seen in at least 2 years. Original. Satirical. Gets into the human psyche.

The strikes thread on the poli bored reminded me of this. The fact that this movie is refreshing because it's original is another strike against the strikers. When originality is the exception, don't complain when bots try to take your job. You did this to yourselves.

That’s not the strikers fault.
It is the studios fault.
Most of the people striking would love to have original ideas on the screen.

Agreed. Most of their "hey, what about this awesome new idea" pitches get met with a response of "we're just going to go with Fast & Furious 14".

Been watching Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix. Really good series. Phil loves everyone and eat. The New Orleans episode is my favorite so far.

Speaking of really good shows, FX comes through again with The Bear.
Just finished season one and the final 10-15 minutes someone was definitely cutting onions somewhere in my house.

100% on rotten tomatoes.
