Not a ton of cap.
Clowney too costly and he resigned w Cleveland.
They need to grab a vet DE.

Knew Clowney was a long shot but would have loved to see the Chiefs make that happen. Oh well. Not sure what they do with the cap space at this point. Would love to see them add a DT, EDGE or OLB

I believe they can carry over that cap space ( it's up to a certain amount but after they sign rookies and other contracts for players who expect to fill spots it will be safely under the amount you can carry over ) to next season.

So if they save, which looks to be around 9-12 million, they can spend extra next year.
I'd personally try and get another guy for depth on edge.
They probably also need to save a bit of space to sign anyone in case of injuries.

I'm not a NFL cap rules wiz though - that's Veach's job.

Yeah, I’m not an expert either. If it makes sense to rollover some cap space that’s fine as well. It doesn’t look like there are many impact DL free agents available.

I think Justin Houston is a bit underrated and could be a good rotational guy for cheap.
And would be nice for him to get back to KC.

I just looked up some players on pff.com that are unsigned. So there are a few impact type players left, none really at the EDGE position though.

#26 - Akiem Hicks (DT) - 32 y/o
#59 - Alexander Johnson (MLB) - 30 y/o
#82 - Dont'a Hightower (MLB) - 32 y/o
#88 - Linval Joseph (DT) - 33 y/o
#94 - Anthony Barr (OLB) - 30 y/o

They have Justin Houston at #40 but have him listed as signed(?)

Speaking of reuniting, #62 Eric Fisher 31 y/o. Would definitely welcome him back in a RT and/or backup role.

Guessing this is because the Ravens put the same tag on Houston as the Chiefs put on Ingram.

Right.
He can still be signed - Ravens would just get a comp pick.

Ah, got it. I would be down to sign him then. Would gladly give up the draft pick required to do so.

Especially since we're getting a compensatory pick for the Dolphins signing Ingram. Signing Houston balances that out.

Yep and after looking at the roster again, KC definitely needs some more depth at EDGE.

Clark
Karlaftis (rookie)

After that you have

Danna (2020 - 5th round)
Kaindoh (2021 - 4th round)
Herring (2021 - undrafted)
Edwards (2020 - undrafted)

That's not great and puts a ton of pressure on Karlaftis while also hoping Clark gets better. Danna is the only one of the other 4 that I think can have an impact.

I wonder if they will use Gay as a free ranging edge rusher? Has speed and toughness. That was the genius of Marty's defenses: Thomas was a constant check down.

I think we may see Willie Gay used in more pass rush situations. The Wisconsin LB the Chiefs drafted this year will probably give them the flexibility to do some of that.

They'll need to do something to generate some pass rush as that looks to be a huge weakness with their roster as it exists today.

It really depends on the two rookies.
Karlaftis was rated in the top 10 by some analysts. Others had him falling mid to late 2nd round.
Chenal was rated in the top 40, i.e. a high 2nd round pick. Also some had him falling to the 4th round.
We spent draft capital trying to develop the rush - a 1st and a 3rd.

Jarran Reed was downright awful last season. Anthony Hitchens was overpaid, played a good amount, and was equally as bad.

If Karlaftis and Chenal play like PFF thinks they can, ( two ESPN analysts have GKarl as their DROY ) we're definitely better than we were last season. You can also assume Nick Bolton and Willie Gay will be a step better in the system.

I do think we should have ( or still be ) proactive finding another piece on the D Line though.

You also get, with Chenal, Gay playing more weak side, which I think he's better suited for.
Then you have Nick speeding around in the middle.

Finally, by just getting Niemann and Sorenson off our roster so Spags cannot play them, I think that's default improvement.

Hitchens too. There is some Matheny in Spags. Not a good combination.

Who has the better season?
MVS or Skyy?

I am really hoping that reception count rankings are:
1) Kelce
2) JuJu
3) Hardman
4) Skyy
5) CEH
6) MVS

Switch Hardman and Skyy and I agree.

I want Skyy to take off and produce early and often. Hardman is likely gone after this year. I want guys who can produce this year but also prep them for next year as they will be a focal point next year.

We have about 2 more good years of Kelce. I hope we enjoy it.
