I think 12 is the perfect number.
8 would just be 5 conference champs plus three more SEC teams.

Which would honestly be more than enough with the way cfb is.
Not that I don't agree with your intended point.

I like 12. A lot. I still think 8 is a bit too low. 16 is too much. That would get watered down.

I don’t like 12 just cuz it gives byes to some teams.

I like it. Do well and win your conference. Likely every year the SEC, ACC, Big 10 and Big 12 will have a bye. Reward them for winning a tough conference.

How about when some at-large team has a much better playoff ranking and resume than some conference champ?
That’s prob more an issue in hoops.
But still, when a football season is only like 13 games either way, it seems like that extra week of rest for the favored team could be an awful lot.
Actually I dunno lol I barely even follow football lol what am I doing on this bored

Expansion playoff talks.
12 teams.
I figured 8 would be enough to where an undefeated team would probably get in.
Could be a lot of games for a college football team to play.
Number of games has been a big argument against expanding, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with EVERY other level of college football.
