I think I probably feel the exact opposite on that. Going to a HBCU seems genuinely appealing, especially right now with everything else going on.
I guess he did say in an interview in Nov 2019 that Howard was probably the school recruiting him the hardest, because most schools backed off thinking he was going pro. Only schools he mentioned were Howard and Oregon. It was just odd timing for me to take that serious and not just an attention grabber for his one college year. One top prospect says the idea of going to an HBCU is appealing and 2 days later a different 5* commits to one.
Well i think now is a unique time in that there is a lot of racially motivated activism going on. Personally i think it is kind of cool to support a HBCU for a top prospect since historically that doesnt happen very often. There is a lot of campaigns going on for black people (and everyone in general) to support black owned businesses and things of that nature so maybe he felt like it would be a cool thing to do. And yes, it is an attention grabber to get more publicity for HBCUs, but i think it is a genuine move and not necessarily coming from a bad place or should be viewed negatively. Did another player possibly give him the idea? Sure maybe, but does it really matter?
Disclaimer: how sure are we that this kid will even get cleared and/or that there will even be college basketball this season for it to even matter where he chooses to go?
