apparently, puke has retired 13, uk 34, and unc 43

(numbers are from different sources, so who knows their validity)

KU has something like 23? (not counting Max and the ladies)
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

We should try and lose more so we don't have to hang so darn many jerseys.

I wouldn't have B12POY as a qualifier alone.
B12POY and on one of the 1st team AAs?
That'll do.

I’m not a fan of any automatic qualifiers.

I think we have a few too many, but I also don’t really care all that much.

Big12POY and 2nd team AA is probably where I'd draw the line....but their other seasons would need to be good too.

If they made a 2nd team AA and B12POY and were an upperclassman, then yes, I'd consider them.
Moot - all it takes is the B12POY.

"16.6 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 40% 3."
3 PPG off. .5 RPG off. Basically nailed the 3 point %.
"1st team all b12."
Yup.
"1st team all defense."
Nope.
"On a 3rd team AA list."
Better.
"KU ranked top 5."
Yup.

I think conference player of the year is a very fair criterion.

Here is a curated selection of dudes who did not win that:

Paul Pierce
Jacque Vaughn
Kirk Hinrich
Mario Chalmers
Brandon Rush
Sherron Collins
Cole Aldrich
Naadir Tharpe

Every one of the Big 12 PoY guys we are discussing got at least 2nd team AA. All but Dok were 1st team.

Then they are good in my book.
And Dok was an upperclassman and won NDPOY.
Also good in my book.

I forget that Piece didn't win CPOY. Not sure if I would have given it to him over Raef but I feel it wouldn't have been wrong if he did win it over Raef.

Here is something that when someone dogs the Big 12 I respond - tell me about Durant, Beasley, and then Griffin in back to back to back seasons. A crazy (to me) thing is that Beasley didn't win Naismith player of the year and some UNC douche did win it - with less points and less rebounds than Beasley.

Two of the best seasons for a player that I recall in the Big 12.......
Durant 25.8 points 11.1 rebounds AS A FRESHMAN
Beasley 26.2 points 12.4 rebounds AS A FRESHMAN

Having a jersey retired every year makes it start to lose its meaning

Its like how we quit hanging individual big 12 title banners, let's quit hanging individual jerseys. Maybe honor them by having a bunch listed on a few banners like what we do with big 12 titles

Lets save the jersey retirement for the wilt, danny etc types. Guys that truly left a lasting mark on the program, and should be remembered for the decades to come.

Not guys that will be replaced by someone just as good in the next year or 2

for me, the only solid metric/criteria would be consensus NPOY

beyond that it gets diluted, and i’m torn in what else might constitute jersey retirement…but, nba accolades don’t even register
