I figured as such. I do understand and I suppose even admire the passion Kansans have for their state but I admit that my not being from Kansas doesn't allow me to feel and appreciate the continued hatred 150+ years later.

Their fan base through the years hasn’t helped.

But yea, I don’t think Kansas and Missouri have gotten along before and after that slave states mouth breather and his goons rode over, surprise attacked Lawrence and burned it to the ground.

I don't hate Mizzou, just some of their fans. I'm sure it goes both ways. Every sport needs a bitter rival, and it was always Mizzou for us. At one point it was the longest on-going rivalry west of the Mississippi River. K-State is our in-state rival, but there really isn't a hatred for each other, more a big brother/little brother rivalry.

For basketball reasons it is because they were the second best team in the Big 8 when I grew up (8 Big 8 regular season titles since I was born - second to KU's 9) so there were a lot of competitive games between us and them.

For personal reasons it is because their fans have always had a Little Brother chip on their shoulder towards KU hoops and have always behaved like bratty little twats that thought any win against Kansas meant that they were the new powerhouse in the conference. They have a disproportionately high number of trashy fans who cross the line of what I would consider to be acceptable fan decorum and rep their ugly black and gold gear until the second it becomes apparent that "this isn't going to be the year" and then them and their gear disappear.

The whole "slavery/Quantrill" as a reason seems forced. There are no Mizzou fans who have anything to do with that so it seems like a silly reason to hate them. And there are a ton of Kansas fans who like myself, were born and raised by Kansas grads/fans just over the state line in Missouri so it seems extra dumb.

I was trying to explain this to Mrs. Wiff yesterday, but whenever I find out that a particular person that I know went to Mizzou (or in any way roots for them), I automatically lose some amount of respect for that person -- even if I otherwise really like them as an individual. I just cannot help it. It is simply a product of my deeply held and inherent disdain for Mizzou, which I am unable to (and have no desire to) change.

but the racial animus still exists, in missouri and at mizzou specifically

not that kansas is perfect by any means, but to pretend that dynamic doesn’t exist is odd
