I also arrived at BLUFF and then FLUFF but my route was STALE, POUND and (very desperately) CHURL. My opening words are one of STARE, SLATE, STONE or IRATE and anagrams thereof.

I was missing the first letter. And I was just trying every available letter and hitting enter until I got an acceptable word. I guess I’ve heard of the word, but I’ve never used it in a sentence before.
