Meanwhile, there are people working 8-12-16-18 hour shifts 5, 6, or even 7 days a week, busting their asses to just to survive and feed and clothe their kids, and some of them aren't getting paid $30,000/$35,000 a year.
But hey, I'll say it again, good for Bill.

Whether CEO pay is “fair” or “right” or whatever is a very complicated question (and the answer, in my opinion, has a lot to do with how open or closed the market is for rank-and-file workers).

Someone who is one-of-one in a massively profitable enterprise should reasonably expect to be paid a massive amount of money.

I think it’s also relevant to your point to consider how many good jobs would not exist at all but for the guy’s unique contributions. How many middle-class incomes are there in KU’s athletics department as compared with, I don’t know, UMKC’s? Or Rockhurst University’s?

I think that is an aspect of this.

The free operation of markets is another. I don’t think it’s controversial at all to say that the benchmarks for coach and administrator compensation would not be what they presently are, but for the status quo being (until very recently) that a significant portion of the market was shut out from the market.

If you believe that there shouldn’t be this much money in college sports generally, I get that. And I don’t think you’re bad or wrong or whatever for believing that. But so long as there IS this much money in college sports - which money comes almost entirely from popular demand for college sports as a vehicle for advertising - then the money has to go somewhere.

Im not going to go into it on Bill Selfs thread.

We obviously don’t agree on things in this department. It’s telling too that those who have very comfortable lifestyles tend to be the quickest to defend the current market. But F the NCAA or the polibored is a better battleground.

I mostly just love the fact that Self has elevated KU to arguably the greatest program in the sport on a historically unprecedented run and I do not want to lose him. If paying the coach who is doing what no other coach has done in modern times more than any other coach in modern times is what they feel it takes to keep this train rolling and you don't have to axe other programs to do it then they should do it.

Not intended to be a battleground. I’m not looking to pick a fight over whether or not this much money should or shouldn’t be in college sports. And I respect your viewpoint.

All I’m saying is that no one has a gun to KU’s head. You’re seeing a market do what markets do. If KU didn’t want to pay this, it doesn’t have to.

I think the number is indicative of KU recognizing that Bill has somehow built a Golden Age right squarely ON TOP of a Golden Age. Looking around at your Indianas and UCLAs (and even UNCs) and so on, I think it’s reasonable to conclude that Bill is one-of-one. And that paying him $13mm is better than paying anyone else even half that amount.

If the people busting their ass were the best in their industry and that industry generated tens of millions of dollars of profit largely off of their work, they would be getting paid a ridiculously high sum as well.
Double edged sword. You are not at all wrong.

I'm not saying Self doesn't deserve "market" value. I feel he does. The amount of money he and the program bring in to the University is enormous and he deserves to be properly compensated for that.
While college basketball provides jobs to many people, and brings pleasure to many people, it is not a necessity for survival.
My beef is that people who I feel do more good for society, and provide necessary services for survival, don't get paid/compensated - what I feel - is accordingly.

Moving on.....

We all know that your salary isn't based on what good you do for society. Some of the best acts of goodness are done by volunteers. The two things have nothing to do with each other.

Teahan basically says in this episode that he thinks this extension indicates Self may be close to retiring after this 5 year extension are up. He'd be 65-66ish by then....i think he'll go a few longer than that, but i do not expect him to be coaching when he's 74 or 75.

One thing about Self's salary: he generates a lot more revenue for the state and media than he takes home. Something I wish the Royals would remember when trading number one picks for journeymen.

Nov 30, 2023 Bill Self previews Kansas' matchup with UConn

I'm surprised we're currently favored by 2 points, according to CBS Sports.

Home court advantage?

Yup.
Home court advantage can vary from 2 to 7 points depending on venue.
I'm thinking Vegas believes UConn is a better team than we are and the line would be closer to -4 UConn at a neutral location.

Sportsbooks apps have opened up here in Maine.

Damn, thanks for posting that Gutter.

Yet another humbling example of why I was so wrong to think we'd never be able to replace Self's predecessor.
