Evaluating Bill Self's future at Kansas and five candidates to one day replace the Hall of Famer

Post by PhDhawk »

I shouldn't even post this link, but I feel obligated to only because of how ludicrous his number 1 choice is.

Have a good laugh. Self's gonna be here for a while, so there's no reason for this.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-baske ... -of-famer/
1. Gregg Marshall

Currently: Coach at Wichita State

Résumé: Marshall began his head coaching career in 1998 at Winthrop, where he coached until 2007. He amassed a 194-83 record during that span, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances and six first-place finishes in the Big South. He left for Wichita State in 2007, and picked up where Mark Turgeon left off by transforming the Shockers into a premier mid-major squad. They have won 25+ games in each of the last nine seasons. He's led them to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and has thrice been named MVC Coach of the Year.

Why it could be him: No coach knows Kansas and its surrounding area -- outside Self -- as well as Gregg Marshall. He's been recruiting the region and navigating it successfully for over a decade now. Of the coaches on this list, he'd arguably be the most sought after if he chose to leave Wichita State, and KU would surely find him appealing. The success he's had everywhere, including Wichita State where he's racked up a 286-98 record, made a Final Four, and consistently advanced in the Big Dance are all reasons he'd likely be considered.

Why it wouldn't be him: Marshall has had the opportunity to make a leap elsewhere in the past but he's elected to stay put at Wichita State. For one: He's paid handsomely. And two: he's a legend in Wichita. He is to the city of Wichita, Kansas -- and the area surrounding it -- what Bill Self is to Lawrence and its surrounding cities. Only obstacle is, why would Marshall leave his legendary status behind to try and replace another celestial figure cross-state? Taking a Kansas job to replace Self would be a daunting task -- especially if he's coming from a program that is a direct rival of Kansas.
First of all, it would NEVER EVER be Marshall. I mean, hell, he's the SAME FUCKING AGE as Self.

Also, the reason he sites is that "he knows the region"...get the fuck out of here, Kansas recruits NATIONALLY...so nice that Gregggggg knows all the coaches at all the small local schools, but if Kansas is ever primarily dependent on local talent only, we're fucked.

And the reasons he cites that it wouldn't happen are that Marshall would turn it down and want to stay, but nothing about the fact that KU wouldn't want a small time coach who's unlikeable and a PR-nightmare. Fuck this Kyle Boone asshole, what a terrible, uninformed writer.

I would bet on the field over the identified pool of five.

Right, especially because based on my timeline, the guy is probably a 28 year old assistant coach somewhere.

Hoiberg is the best bet on there.
It's not going to be Marshall.
Fuck that.

First of all, the last sentence is hilarious. "He's at a direct rival of Kansas." Bull.

But... From that list, it would either be Hoiberg or White.

I mean, I went to battle with this on .net, but I still think Bennett would be my top choice if Self leaves in the next 5 years. But we are still about 10-15 years away from Self leaving in my eyes, so there will be some new up and comer that will be considered.

Over/under on Self staying more than 6 seasons (after this season).

I'd probably take the under based on things he's said, but maybe he's changed his mind and wants to coach well into his 60s. He turns 56 this December. I don't think he'll be coaching at age 65 or later personally, but that's just my guess.

Not really a fan of Hoiberg's offense chucking 3's for the most part, but if he was somewhere where he didn't have to bring in transfers every year that could be interesting.

Over

You've been predicting Self was going to retire soon the entire time you've been posting. No indication today that his retirement is any closer than it was years ago when you started with this assumption and you're still basing it off of shit he said probably 10 or more years ago. I'd imagine that when you're in your 40s your 60s seem a lot older than they do when your in your mid to late 50s.

He's 55. I'd be surprised if he doesn't coach to at least 65. Why would he quit at 60 or younger? What other coaches quit that young while at the top? Look at how many coaches are well into their 60s and still coaching.

If you think he doesn't stick around as long as Boeheim or K, I'd agree with you. But I really can't see Self just hanging it up at 60 unless something unforeseen happens. I mean, you're suggesting he retires at about the same age Cal is right now, and several years younger than Izzo is now. Those aren't guys who seem like they should be put out to pasture right now.

If K would ever retire, I think it gives Self a goal to go after at KU, wins specifically. Unfortunately the vampire won't ever quit.

Under.
After his 5th title, he goes off to take another athletic job ( AD/admin ) other than coaching.

Bennett, to be a viable candidate in my eyes, needs to have a stylistic/gameplan epiphany even more stark than the one where Bill figured out threes are good.

Sure. And I'd think these things go together.

Frontrunners should not want to play games in the 50s and 60s. That's just not how you leverage a personnel advantage.

Gregg Marshall?? haha! Great trolling right there.

His wife's behavior alone has permanently guaranteed he will never coach at KU. That's a poor reflection on him that he would marry that crazy woman.

That's a terrible list.

Bob Frederick isn't the AD anymore. We're not going to stay "in the family" just because. That's just dum.

Was going to post the article but didn't after I read the first possible replacement. If he knew the Kansas fan-base, Marshall wouldn't even be a candidate. Hoiberg would be ok, but we can't be offense only.

I like Marshall’s wife. Prefer the daughter, though.
