5. Kansas vs. Kansas State

The Sunflower Showdown is a historic rivalry that goes way back—all the way back to 1907, to be precise. And while the Jayhawks lead the all-time series comfortably at 196–93, the Wildcats have had their runs, including winning 21 of 31 in an 11-year span from the early ’70s to early ’80s. Yet when Frank Martin took over the ’Cats in 2007–08, he inherited a team that had not defeated its in-state rival at home since 1983—a stretch of 24 straight losses to KU in Manhattan. But that year the Wildcats had Michael Beasley, a freshman phenom who went on to be the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft. Before the sides met that season, Beasley famously said, “We’re going to beat Kansas at home. We’re going to beat them in their house. We’re going to beat them in Africa. Wherever we play, we’re going to beat them.”

He turned out half-right—Kansas State finally ended its home drought with an 84–75 win on Jan. 30, 2008, which in the process handed the No. 2-ranked Jayhawks their first loss of the season. Kansas would prevail in the revenge game in Lawrence and has only lost three times to the Wildcats since. Nevertheless, the rivalry is looking promising again behind a rising Kansas State, which lost its four regular-season games against Kansas in 2017 and 2018 by a grand total of 10 points.

Rivalry is getting tighter! I mean, sure, they still have only beat Kansas 3 times in the last 10 years, but the last 4 losses were only by 10 points!!

Seriously. We seem to play UK every year. They seem more of a rival.

And this thread smells of timmybait.

Eh. I mean the games have been decent recently.

But they have only won 2 games in Lawrence since 1994. I'd consider Iowa State a greater rival in terms of results. They on the other hand has had 3 wins in the last 4 years in AFH.

In fact, the last 12 times KU and Iowa State have played at all locations, the record is in KU's favor only 7-5.

Remember when they had a chance to beat us in Lawrence last year but then Liberace needed to draw up a play?

That never works for the guy.

I might even throw UWV in there as more of a rival since they joined the conference.

Imo a rival has to have more to it than simply playing our basketball team in close games.

And UK has a rival in Louisville, so that's tough. Our fans definitely hate UK and especially Calipari, but that's about as deep as that goes. Maybe it feels sort of like a rival because we have so few true "peers" when it comes to hoops?

ksu is our biggest rival next to MIZZOU.
We don't play MIZZOU so ksu is next up.
Most ksu fans will be quick to point out that KU is their rival.

No doubt about it. Even has the degree from KU to prove it!

I feel sorry for people who think KSU is a rival. They never have been and they never will be.

Just a different impression of what a rival is.
We used to be competitive but now they just beat the shit out of us in football and we beat the shit out of them in basketball.
I don't think the sole reason for being a rival is how close your games have been recently - geography ( GEOGRAPHY SMACK ) clearly has a role here.

Grew up in Kansas so I understand first hand the animosity between the two schools - it's there - and we as fans really hate loosing to them in basketball ( it's rare ).

If we don't have ksu as a rival, and we don't have MIZZOU since we don't play them, we don't have a rival.
I don't buy that Duke, Kentucky ( other blue bloods ) are rivals.

Just because one fan base says a team is their biggest rival, doesn't in turn make them the biggest rival.

I think the only time both sides agree on who the biggest rival is, would be Duke/UNC.

This is so true...Colorado would say Nebraska is their biggest rival. Nebraska used to say their rival was Oklahoma. Not the same rival for either school.

Kansas/Missouri will happen again if Missouri ever comes back from a string of bad coaches.
