Same. Even on low, if I put a big beef roast in in the morning, it's overcooked by the time I come home from work, and the liquid is boiling.

Are those still a thing?
I think it's an antiquated old timey word for what the folks nowadays are calling a "Traeger."

He thinks that is pepper on his hot dog bun?

I could go for some portillo's. Minus the "cheese".

Hit the road for KS today!

Can’t decide whether to live blog in the larrytown this weekend thread, or the birthday thread, or just here, cuz pretty much every meal is gonna be bbq.

Tried for Smokin’ Yards on my way down the hill, but they had a sign in the door said they were closed for an employee appreciation party.

Now at a 24hr pancake house in bumfuck western ks. Hitting the spot and grateful for it, tho I guess this bbq live blog is off to a weak start

I heard Stanley James Smokehouse is good.

I was an assistant manager of that gas station in college.

East Lawrence…you mean like, Johnson County?

For real tho is the place worth checking out?

More so than maybe one of the bbq joints on iowa. Or just breaking down and getting Zen Zero. Maybe they have like a Korean bbq dish, so as to satisfy the terms of the live blog

I've only heard good things.
( i.e. from three people though one of them is an avid smoker - not cigs )

Both Biemer's and Bigg's have been only fine for me.
( fine being better than BBQ joints up here but i've done several batches of the same food better or not comparing to Bryants / LCs / KC Joes )

I miss the ads.
"How about a Fat Tire Amber Ale - NOW!"
I miss how many fries you got even though they weren't very good.

How’s about an actual on-topic update!

Been crazy upon arrival in KS so far. But did have Stanley James for lunch yesterday. 2 meat 2 side platter plus unsweet tea.

Image

The lady there said they were outta burnt ends so I got brisket and turkey.

Turkey was just ok. 2.5/5. Woulda prob been better if she hadn’t been talking it up as the best but then it ended up being kinda dry.

Brisket pretty good. 4/5. Also a tad dry, but still tender and flavorful, and the benefit of not being talked up too much.

Cole slaw good but kinda generic, tho that’s not necessarily a bad thing. 3.5/5.

Mac and cheese good. Kinda white-cheddar-y. Coulda maybe been a tad creamier. 4/5.

Sauces kinda meh. The sweet sauce tasted like straight molasses, the regular tasted like molasses and ketchup, and the spicy tasted like molasses ketchup and spices. 2/5

Ambiance 5/5. Gas station bbq hits different. Country music on the stereo. And to its benefit, the place was only like half full with blue collar types in hard hats, rather than line out the door with y’all tourists.

Overall experience 4.5/5. Good rec, thanks you guys.

Now on deck for lunch today….Q39

Q39 is pretty allsome. I haven't been there since the owner passed away, doesn't seem to have dropped off any.

That turkey does look dry. White meat turkey will be dry unless you brine it, and don't over cook it. Slice to order. Tricky stuff.
