Last night was crazy. Parts of the city got hit hard. Most interesting thing to me is you could go one block and it was basically crushed and then a block north/east/west/south - nothing. Then 2 blocks from there, crushed. Very inconsistent. Basically no damage near me.

Few pics I took of tree damage near Belmont Harbor.

Hot dry weather here. Much of the state is on fire. Smoke filling the sky, and our lungs. The sun is turned an ominous orange color. Everything smells like a campfire, and not in a good way. Stage 2 fire ban takes effect today. Cough.

2 more wildfires in the area: one by Cameron pass one county north close enough to see the main smoke cloud from here, and one by the Williams Fork reservoir in my county about a half hour west of me.

Pray for rain.

the entirety of colorado might just go up in flames over the next couple weeks

we’re waiting for monsoon rains too, but they look to be at least a couple of weeks out, and even then who knows how much actual precipitation will come

i’m not very optimistic it’ll be anything worthwhile

was shocked last weekend. went to the same spot up in the uintas that we spent last labor day weekend, and it was a shocking contrast just how much lower the lakes are when compared to last year

Ugh, yeah.

Monsoon season is supposed to start up early July here. Clockwork afternoon squalls.

But this summer, we had like 4 days of drizzle, and been bone dry ever since.

I figure I should organize my valuables in some easy to grab duffle bags and boxes in case I gotta evacuate in a hurry. Freaky!

On our way into La Junta, we could see the smoke drifting all along the front range down to Walsenburg and literally hiding the mountains.

silver lining...

better to be a renter than a home owner in these situations, imo

went from 10 acres when first reported yesterday afternoon to 1300+ by the evening. It’s in an area with a lot of beetle kill pine, and is displaying “extreme wildfire behavior.” Currently 0 percent contained.

tangential, but it is really interesting to see the different management strategies employed to mitigate bark beetles. this is one case where, at least in some cases, states do a better job than the feds

how about just some states...

some states are led by “good” people, others not so much

some state policies are good, others not so much

some state officials do great jobs implementing policy, others not so much

Firefighters responding to another column of smoke by Monarch Lake, just a few miles north of me.

Illicit campfires suspected as the cause for both. (Arson charges to come?)

Y’all are burning the state down.

Williams Fork fire up to 4300 acres today, still 0% contained.

Monarch Lake fire 1/10 acre, supposedly started by lightning, but it was bluebird today.

Apparently a lightning strike can smolder for days before it erupts, but that’s also a heavily used tourist area and campground, who knows.

Up to 6000 acres this morning. Who knows how big the reported number will be tonight. Plume of smoke over 40,000 feet high.

Evacuation shelter set up in Granby.

I got all stressed about where I can take my stuff, then decided to just get renter’s insurance instead. Man, what a relief. I take back everything I said about capitalism!

...that is, unless they call me tomorrow and tell me they aren’t gonna honor it.
