Jacoba Ballard was conceived in a brick office building on 86th Street in Indianapolis when fertility doctor Donald Cline inseminated her mother with his own sperm instead of the donor sperm he had promised.

To Ballard, it was an offense akin to rape — one Cline is suspected of repeating with as many as 50 other women. But the law in Indiana, as in most other states, was not written to account for such a crime. So Cline was charged with obstruction of justice, and accused of false advertising and “immoral conduct” in the delivery of services. He lost his medical license, was fined $500 and received a year’s probation.

He ate a slug on a dare, became paralyzed and died

...After downing the slug, Sam became weak and complained of severe pain in his legs, according to "The Sunday Project." Sam's mother, Katie Ballard, told the news show that at first they worried he might have multiple sclerosis, which had afflicted her husband. But doctors said no, that wasn't the cause.

Then Sam turned to his mother and told her he had eaten a slug, "And I went, 'No, no one gets sick from that,' " Katie Ballard said. CNN has also reached out to Ballard.

Soon, however, doctors told them otherwise. Sam had developed rat lungworm disease from the infected slug, changing his life forever.

SweetHearts, the colorful, heart-shaped candies with sugary messages like "Kiss Me" and "My Love" will be scarce this year. If you're lucky enough to find them, they'll be from last year's batch.

It's kind of a historic moment. These candies have been a mainstay of Valentine's Day since 1866. The candies are so entwined with this special day that they ranked as the No. 1 candy for Valentine's Day in 2017 and 2018, according to data from CandyStore.com, an online bulk candy store.

The candies may not be going away forever. But the reason they're not around this year has to do with the demise of America's beloved New England Confectionery Co...

Unfortunately for fans, the company went out of business last May following several warnings from the Food and Drug Administration citing food safety violations, including "significant evidence of rodent activity" and unsanitary conditions. Yes, we're talking about rat poop. In candy-making equipment.

These states want you to eat more roadkill

February last year, Jessica Mundall came across a dead buck while driving. The animal had just been hit and killed by a semi truck, and was still “super fresh.” She and her husband, both hunters, processed the deer on the side of the road, taking three legs home in the bed of their truck (the fourth leg was shattered from the impact). “After that, we were hooked,” says Mundall, 26, who works for the state’s fish and game department in Boise, Idaho. “We ended up getting our freezer filled off of roadkill.”

...Over 20 states allow roadkill salvage. Since July 2016, Washington has allowed the salvage of elk and deer. Pennsylvania allowed the practice in 2017. In January 2019, Oregon launched their own salvage program. Now, a new California bill proposes to the same.
