Nationalism

Post by Mjl »

I heard Trump on the radio proudly boasting of being a nationalist.

That a good thing?

I think it's scary.

He doesn't have a clue what that even means.

Just a sound bit he picked up from Bannon.

Definition of nationalism
1 : loyalty and devotion to a nation
especially : a sense of national consciousness (see CONSCIOUSNESS sense 1c) exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups

Sounds good to me. Sure beats the last POTUS apologizing and giving away stuff all the time.

Context: Trump declared himself a nationalist in contrast to globalists who apparently don’t care about their country as much.

John McCain: To fear the world we have organized and led the three quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain the last, best hope of earth, for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems, is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.

John McCain: We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil. We are the custodians of those ideals at home and their champion abroad. We've done great good in the world. That leadership has had its costs, but we have become incomparably powerful and wealthy as we did. We have a moral obligation to continue in our just cause and we would bring more than shame on ourselves if we don't...

If Trump were truly a Nationalist, shouldn't his first order of business be to boot his (wife) and in laws onto the first boat heading east?

"ist", "ist", "ist", blah, blah, blah, fucking, blah, blah, blah.
What is the obsession in this society/country where way too many people feel the need to label themselves and others - when the majority of the time the label they are using is wrong and/or one that fits their agenda and own definition and not the actual definition?

Pretty freaking simple kids. Those who are on the "left" are going to rip on the Donald for calling himself a Nationalist and those on the right who get hard dicks and nipples whenever the Donald speaks are going to get off on him calling himself a Nationalist. Fantastic! In other news......

I don't believe anyone has ever labeled Rick Wilson as on the "left." He nails it in this column as to why Trump's proclamation of "nationalism" is so dangerous.

He sent a signal to his alt-right allies that it’s time to rally to his side once again, just ahead of the midterm elections. It was one more knife into the moldering corpse of the GOP, which with every Trump rally has looked more and more like some clapped-out third-world claque of the Glorious Leader’s sycophants, and less like a modern political institution.

snip

Even for a president who loves to disrupt traditional institutions, boundaries, and national mores, Trump’s full and open embrace of nationalism Monday night crossed a bright new line. We’ll likely read about Oct. 22, 2018, in our history books, for as much as Trump has consistently acted like a 70-year-old Queens racist with authoritarian statist leanings clad in nationalist rhetoric, last night was the first time the word escaped his blubbery lips, his quivering seven-pound chin-sack swaying to the roar of a Texas crowd of worshippers.
