I liked going to the one across the street from the Nelson.
^^^ That would be sad!

Did someone say "Winstead's"?

(Defixione is the only person here I have any hope has seen or heard of the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils before, because they were a blues-funk band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1970.)

I think a lot of places in this vid will look familiar to people here:

Yeah, I was disappointed the video didn't reflect the KC restaurant scene when the song was released in the early 70s, but I'm disappointed people confuse me with Heather Locklear and not Charlize Theron, too.

Ha! I've seen the HRD more times than I've seen the places in the video!

The first 801 Chophouse restaurant was established in Des Moines, Iowa in 1993 and has since grown into six different locations across the Midwest. When you visit any 801 Chophouse location you’ll experience an intimate and comfortable, yet upscale atmosphere.

If I'm not mistaken, 801 did not come to the metro until PnL district was completed.

801 is the most ridiculously overpriced place in town. When compared to what you get (in quality and service) at Eddie V's and The Capital Grille, 801 is a mess.

They have my favorite bar of those 3 places--the Leawood one is actually the better of the 2--but I'm not sure how they continue to operate here.

But - you have to go to Leawood. No one wants that, not for a night out, or basketball.

At least no one under 50.

My Darden stock thinks you have exquisite taste!

We'll ignore the fact that it's down > 1% today.

801 opened in the Phillips House Hotel in 1993. P&L opened in 2007.

Interesting buy-low opportunity. I'm sure someone there is noodling on a "Local by Darden" concept, where they come in and "save" local restaurants that will otherwise go under.

The service reflects the overall offering of food and ambiance of the entire restaurant. 801 is an in-between job of Chili's to high-end chain/local.

Except the bill is "high-end chain/local".

Speaking of Cap Grille. The wife and I visited CG last night for our anniversary. First visit to a sit down restaurant since the Big 12 tourney. Had an entire back room to ourselves. Very nice and felt safe.

The 801 in the Phillips House Hotel in KC didn't open 1993. Like Geezer had posted, that's when the first one opened in Des Moines. I clicked on a link to the KC location, but didn't realize it was taking me to the Co.'s website, where you then pick a location. I can't seem to find when the one in KC opened, but it sure seems to me it was open before P&L.

Was it owned by the 801 people in DSM?

Drove through Winstead's for lunch today thanks to this thread. Hope it survives--still a pretty good greasy burger.
