College Basketball Preseason Top 25

1. KANSAS JAYHAWKS

Who’s gone: Devonte’ Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk, Malik Newman
Who do they add: Dedric Lawson, K.J. Lawson, Charlie Moore, Quentin Grimes, Devon Dotson, David McCormack
Projected starting lineup: Devon Dotson, Marcus Garrett, Quentin Grimes, Dedric Lawson, Udoka Azubuike

Losing Graham is a major, major blow for this program, but they had as much talent sitting out this season as any program in college basketball. Cal transfer Moore should be able to step in and handle the point guard duties – if that role isn’t taken over by Dotson – while Dedric Lawson and K.J. Lawson will give Bill Self actual power forwards, something he has been yearning for the last two years. This team is talented, they are old, they are well coached and they have a functional point guard on their roster. There is a lot to like about the Jayhawks heading into the year.

Kinda seems like they forgot about Vick coming back.

Garrett is going to be really, really good this year. If he can shoot 35% on 3's, he will be a killer off the bench.

Wouldn't surprise me.
Also wouldn't surprise me if he redshirted.

Nebraska? No Marquette?
Best I've seen IMO other than that.

Andy Katz' preseason Power 36 college basketball rankings
2. Kansas: The Jayhawks are loaded, but the one thing they don’t have is veteran leadership from Kansas guards like they've had in past years with Frank Mason and Devonte Graham. OK, maybe that’s a nitpick, but that’s the one reason to knock them down from the No. 1 perch for now. Dedric and K.J. Lawson came over from Memphis and sat out last season. Cal transfer Charlie Moore, newcomer Quentin Grimes and Lagerald Vick will all take starring role turns. The return of Udoka Azubuike and Silvio De Sousa gives the Jayhawks the anchors inside. Kansas should be in the mix for the title all season.

AP prediction: 1-3.

I'm almost numb to doing this over UK...every...single...year, when a couple things are obvious:

1. UK is not a "preseason #1-type" without an obvious NPOY-candidate freshman; and

2. It is VERY possible UK will be that good at the end of the season this year.

But, Lord, they're going to lose 6-10 games on the way to March. We'll lose 1-4.

Dick Vitale ranks the top teams in college basketball

1. Kansas

Kansas returns two starters from last year’s Final Four team, then adds to that three high-level transfers who averaged at least 12 points per game at their previous stops. “Bill Self is thrilled to have Udoka Azubuike and Lagerald Vick back,” Vitale wrote. “Then add Dedric Lawson and the Jayhawks will make it 15 straight Big 12 titles with the hopes of another national championship.” Lawson is the class of that transfer crop after earning first-team all-conference honors at Memphis, and Self has said he plans to run the offense through him as he’s also the best passer on the team. That could help relieve some of the pressure on a highly talented but young backcourt duo of Quentin Grimes and Devon Dotson, while the Jayhawk frontcourt of Lawson, Azubuike, Silvio De Sousa, David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot might be the nation’s best.

Even though the AP doesn't know how numbering works, I'll take it.

This poll is pretty accurate. Just confirms even more that KU should not have more than 1 conference loss this year.

So we potentially will have four top 10 teams in the non con schedule.

For now it's accurate. Stay tuned......

Last season Kentucky, Florida, and USC were pre-season top 10.
Loyola and Texas Tech were not.

Someone told me KenPom has us favored in every single game on our schedule. And I would guess that, if anything, KenPom slightly underrates us because of Dedric's year in residence (and absolutely perfect fit with Bill Self).
