First year I'm doing it on my own with TurboTax.

Anyone else have any experience with that or HR Block?

Seems pretty easy and much cheaper than what I paid my CPA for the last few years. Granted, my wife and I are pretty simple. No investment properties. Just mostly 1 job each and then kids stuff which is easy to track.

I've used Block since it was Kipplinger's Tax Cut.
Never had a problem.

Support the small local shop: HR Block.

I do know that they hire attorneys on contract for this time of year if you need to call in on anything.

Used TurboTax for about a couple of decades now, and it's straighforward (Federal and State), including electronic filing since it has been available. Of course, our taxes are straighforward as well. Couple of W2 incomes, 1099INT and 1099DIV, simple deductions (charitable contributions, mortgage interest, state income and county property tax) and occasional stock sales. Buy the deluxe version at Costco (~$40 with coupon) and finish everything by mid February. If we have money coming we file right away, and on April 14th if we have to pay. Easy peasy.

It dawned on me that taking everything to an accountant that I was just paying him to fill out a form. That's what software is good at. Plug in your numbers and it tells you the answer.

That’s what I told my wife. For all I know, they could be using a tax software. And I pay them $150-$200. When instead, filing both federal and state is only $40 on that tax software.

Be careful how you answer those questions. If you make a tiny mistake, the IRS may audit you and then you'll have those dumbfucks on your back for a few years. I still get letters from these morons and they have no idea what they are doing. I wish I was exaggerating but I'm not. I would never use TurboTax again after being audited for a small mistake that caused he a huge headache trying to get resolved. I pay the $100 now to a proper tax specialist and have peace of mind.

TLDR: Just do whatever you can to avoid attracting the IRS' attention.

I use HnR block website...try to support local companies although they are a little more expense than TurboTax. I've always done mine, pretty simple. I have no kids, not married, all my investments are in 401k's or Roth IRAs. I don't buy/sell stocks, so don't have to track capital gains/losses. Home mortgage interest, property taxes and my income. Takes about an hour or so. Probably do it tomorrow morning, see what my refund is :)

Getting a refund is my only motivation to do my taxes early. Forced savings also and it feels like I'm getting a bonus :).

Yep. I can live without 2% interest.
