If the Chiefs are going to give up 2nd round picks for a one year rental, they should have just kept Dee Ford.

Word is the Chiefs and Seahawks are in serious talks on a deal for Frank Clark coming to KC.

1st this year, a 2020 2nd rounder and a swap of mid-round picks. But to complete the deal, Clark and Chiefs have to agree on a deal.

I mean... Sure..?

Don't like the 1st given up. But Clark is a proven player at 25. A perfect 4-3 DE who can get after the QB and stop the run. Dee Ford was not a perfect 4-3 DE.

Dumb.
Loose multiple picks and then strap yourself financially to a guy who has some violent history.

Isn't that exactly what you did?

Trade completed.

Technically they lost 1 pick and moved up in the 3rd round and got a better 2nd round pick than what they did have.

They got a 2nd for Dee Ford. The 2nd round pick for Clark washes out, so you are basically giving up the 29th pick for him.

Deal will probably similar to DeMarcus Lawrence's deal with Dallas. 5/$105M.

Unless there's something about Ford we don't know (bad medicals, or locker room, or something), this doesn't seem to make much sense. Net-net, you're giving up a 1st rounder for what appears to be a modest (if any) upgrade.

Right.
Is Clark > Ford + 1st round pick?
I don't think so.

I hope I'm wrong but IMO this sucks. Too much.

Definitely an odd scenario. While is is a 1st, it’s a very late 1st. If Clark turns into a legit edge rusher the trade will be worth it.

From a strictly football stand point this is a win. Clark is three years younger and overall a better player than Ford was or could be. At pick 29 you are taking a gamble on what you get. The Chiefs knew they needed an edge rusher and there wasn't very many immediate plug and play players left in FA or the draft. Clark is not only a 'plug and play' but he is a potential game changer.

Now off the field Clark has HUGE red flags but I would hope that his contract language is as such that he is on thin ice. You do what you have done in the past and that contract, guarantees, etc are void.

It also means another boring draft for the chefs fans.

Clark was drafted late 2nd round.
There is a lot of edge talent in this draft.
We're saying we couldn't find that talent ( which would also mean finding a team friendly/rookie contract rather than whatever we'll end up paying Clark ).

Yes and no. there is talent at the top end but many, if not all of them have question marks around them. I would take my chances on a guy that has 30+ sacks in three years compared to what you could potentially get at pick 29. Even if you moved up I don't see a guy, other than Bosa worth aggressively moving up for. It is clear that Veach is in 'win now' mode.

The guy I would love to see them go after would be Pat Pete. Still one of the best corners in the league, relatively injury free, is familiar with HB, and would be a respected voice in the locker room.

Who do they have left to give for Patrick Peterson?
Might as well not show up for the draft this year if we gave up picks for him.

Clark 5 years, 105 million.
Stupid.
Dee Ford, 5 years 85 million ( and could have kept him franchised and signed him for maybe less than that next year ).

That would require some maneuvering by Veach. Perhaps 'Reek is on the chopping block? I know they have the 60ish pick in the second round.

Agreed - the Chiefs drafts are going to be very boring for the next couple of years but the trade off was Mahomes. I'll take that.

Basically a 3 year deal. Years 4 and 5 are team options.

Chiefs capitalizing on Mahomes' rookie deal. Which is what all teams should try to do.

The Chiefs got better for the next 3 years. They weren't going to find a guy like Clark in the first round.

I'm all for this. Character concerns scare me as a fan, but on the field, there's not many DEs better than him.

Even after this deal. KC still has 3 picks in the top 100. Plenty of value there in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Kelce, Hunt, Justin Houston, were all guys drafted in the 3rd round.
