Anyone who will pay for the $175 dollar seat.
It can be 85 or JimWest or dolomite or whomever.

very dickish, particularly if they knew the situation with the restaurant

can’t your single friend find a date? or have a platonic friend of their own that would want to go?

Single friend is looking but it's not on him to have to find a friend.
175 per seat.
Single friend has one said seat covered. We'd have to bite the other seat I guess.

We didn't know ( so nor did they ) about the situation with the restaurant until they cancelled and we called the restaurant to find out if we could change our table from 4 to 3.

If we have to buy the single seat, do we just ask for that portion to go?
( i'm sure they'd be offended if we asked them but hey, we're paying for it! )

I think the other couple should be obligated for something.

If you're paying for it, they should bring out the food. If it's a $175 pp joint, the portions are going to be small. You can all split the extra food.

I'd love to come but we're in the middle of selling our house and moving.

Too bad they don't have 40s.

In an ideal world, i'd agree.
It's also an hour and a half drive away so we rented an airbnb nearby so we'll be footing all of that too.

I don't know enough of the details to comment, but... How long ago did they agree to go, only then to now leave you holding the bag?

I would take the facts as they are, and present them to the other couple and ask them what they $ee a$ their obligation. (I'm assuming that it's too late for you to change the AirB&B reservation this late,yada, yada.). Like them, you didn't know the restaurant would make you pay for 4 people, and thankfully you've found a third, but, do they think it's fair for you to have to pay for the other, vacant seat, and their part of the Airbnb? Should they agree to pay for half of the $175 restaurant charge, and half of the vacant Ayrbandb reservation? Depending on some details we don't know, you might learn a lot about your "friends". On the other hand, if this friendship is that important to you and this not a fight/discussion you want to have...

If you can afford to make a reservation for $175/seat (plus an overnight stay), you can afford the extra $175 you are out.

That's the key.
I don't think they understood how much it would be in the end so I didn't want to put them in that spot ( oh hey you're fucking everything up - give us some money for cancelling ).

And Dr. Pepper, we discussed that, but in the end a 525 dinner ( i'm not JimWest, I don't have 1000 dollar lunches ) plus covering 3/4ths of the airbnb just didn't seem worth it to me.

BUT fortunately for us, we found a couple who wants to go.
Now, because our solo friend ( sorry ous ) couldn't find someone to go with, we gotta break the bad news - but he had already said he'd back out if we found a couple who wanted to go.

Geezer and min better stay up at least an hour after the meal.
