Silver linings of shutdown

Post by PhDhawk »

We've talked plenty about the negatives of a worldwide pandemic, the worst tragedy of all being that michawk can't golf. But what are the benefits?

My lawn looks great.
I don't get accosted by bake sales, fund raisers, etc. when I go to the store.
No more small talk with strangers.

What else?
I only came to kick some ass...

Rock the fucking house and kick some ass.

Restaurants that didn't do pick up orders that do now.
Laundry not a weekend chore.
Lunches during the work week are generally better.

I was thinking about "laundry" earlier, and what a drag it must be to not have your own washer and dryer, and be dependent on a laundromat these days.

We may have bought back some time with reduced CO2 emissions.

My local plant nursery decided to stock all kinds of vegetable and tomato plants so as to consider themselves in the "agricultural" essential category, so I don't have to drive 25 miles to Lowe's to get veggie plants.

Should have mentioned how pleased it makes me to see the employees at the nursery still at work, unlike most of the shuttered other businesses along the road, and to think that it's a business that will probably survive, unlike many of the other small businesses that people have put their work and savings into. I worked at the nursery one hot, humid Florida summer when a friend was first getting it going and try to patronize it.

It's kind of light in the darkness of people losing their jobs and businesses going under to see the current owners cleverly ordering all kinds of vegetable plants as a way to qualify as an "essential business."

Ditto on the yard looking great and being happy about no more talking to strangers.

I've been enjoying the simple things like being able to have breakfast with the kids every morning....late night movies and games with the kids with no stress about bed times or preparing for "tomorrow".

I'm working from home, but definitely slacking....which isn't a huge problem because loan business that relates to my evaluation volume is slower than usual right now since many were more focused on government loans (until those ran out).

Other things bringing happiness:

-with wife furloughed until schools start again (school social worker/therapist) it means no working at night or preparing for "tomorrow" so more nights to grill out/cook and hang out drinking late at night alone (well assuming we can get the kids to sleep/stay in their room😂🙈)...where that would usually have been weekend night activities prior to this.

-those donny dollars brought me some happiness....tossed most of those into the 529plan (college savings investment act) for the kids.

-day drinking frequently has been fun. My job isn't rocket science, so sometimes I even get some "busy" work done too on the laptop.

-I may change my tune in a few months, or if my kids were older....but getting to be their "teacher" along with my wife of course has been a blast. It's not always easy to get them focused, but we're doing lots of fun things together. Probably really helping the 3yr old becase he's sitting there for all the kindergarten work for the older 1.

-sadness our Jayhawks didn't get a chance to lay it on the line and dance for the glory...but happy we had such a good season. Easy to cheer for a guy like Dok. Hard to know what would have happened, but we'd have been a handful. The what could have been will always be torture, but I've also watched enough tourneys to know that heartbreak is always waiting unless you can be nearly perfect for 6 games in a row....so I just smile on the great season and hope Dok and Dotson do well in the NBA, and that MG Och and DMac get a chance to write their own history next year.

My wife is getting a normal amount of sleep now that she doesn't have to get up at 4:30am to get to the rink so that's awesome. It's been nice getting to watch a show with her every night.

Seeing the kids throughout the day is amazing. I miss them every day when I am at work.

I am getting more work done every day since we have ironed out our technological hurdles. With no commute and not as many different distractions or time walki g to and from meeting rooms, I am at my desk uninterrupted for more chunks of productive segments of time.

Someone I know posted this. I don't feel everything listed is great but I get how some people feel all of it is.

No school shootings,
TRAFFIC is gone,
GAS is affordable,
BILLS extended.
KIDS are at home with their FAMILIES.
PARENTS are home taking care of their CHILDREN.
COMMUNITIES are coming together
FAST FOOD replaced by HOME COOKED MEALS.
Hectic SCHEDULES replaced by NAPS, REST, and RELAXATION.
The AIR seems CLEANER.
The WORLD quieter.
PEOPLE are conscious about HYGIENE and HEALTH.
PEOPLE are growing their own food
MONEY doesn't seem to make the WORLD GO ROUND anymore.
DOCTORS AND NURSES are being praised and recognized instead of athletes and celebrities
And WE now have TIME, finally,
to STOP and SMELL the ROSES.
