Picky eaters

Inspired by trad’s supertasters post in the random thread.

For real though what the eff?

Life’s too short to not eat all the food.

As usual, I'm the opposite. We live in a culture and time of excess food.

Food is calories, if you eat too many, you'll get fat, and sick, and die.

If you have a surplus of food and eating too much is bad for you, why would you waste ANY of it on stuff you don't like when there's so much good food readily available?

Now...people who won't try food, that's a different story.

And, I feel differently if you're invited over for to a friend's house for dinner, for example.

i’ll admit to scoffing at two items on my dinner plate: peas and lima beans

not sure why, as i was exposed to both early on in my life. though, i’ve never cared for either

otherwise, there isn’t much that bothers me, save for the grilled, congealed blood cubes i was offered in the Philippines

Yes, peas are the worst.

And high in sugar. Skip the peas and grab a donut.

Had a blood clot in a bowl of soup once, I ate the soup, but never did consume the blood clot.

Blood clots don’t sound particularly tasty, but I’d at least try it if someone offered (a sincerely prepared dish)

I’m allergic to certain tree nuts, but will still often try to eat food even if it has them in it.

I’m not a fan of escargot. And raw oysters. But do enjoy cooked shellfish. And will sometimes hesitate to eat food so spicy it would even make 85 blush.

But other than that!

Picky eaters ( adults more specifically but i'd put kids of a certain age+ in here too) who make a point to everyone when it's time to eat the things they don't want or get offered something and make a face/fuss about it are different than those who just avoid eating certain things.

i.e. if you go to a restaurant, the picky eaters i'm down with will find something on the menu that'll work for them -- but the awful picky eaters take a dish on the menu, explain what's on it they don't like, and then have the dish catered to them.

Or, if invited to dinner, say it's family style, the picky eaters i'm down with will just say 'no thank you' or just not dish any of the food they don't like on the plate, while the awful picky eaters will go on and on why they can't/won't eat that food.

I don't like parsnips and fiddleheads to the point where i just won't eat them.
I'm not fond of blood pudding.
Other than that, i'm not sure there's a common food that's off limits.

i’m tempted to say that you just haven’t had them prepared well

Nah. Escargot is disgusting. So are oysters and pretty much everything else that comes from the sea.

I had escargot in a little town in France near Dijon.
Scrumptious.

I don't like very large oysters but will eat them.
I do like the smaller ones however.

I guess I’d try escargot again.

For junior prom my date wanted to go to some French joint, and of course orders the escargot. And of course makes me try too. I couldn’t finish chewing.

Razor clams and stuff like that, served in some kinda spicy broth with fresh bread to soak it up, can be sooo good

There's a guy who goes clammin' right off my property.
Just parks at the end of the block, cuts through the woods, and he's out there half the day in his waders, clammin' away.
Kinda wanna charge him some clams on his way out.

Agree with all this.

But the flip is the asshole who wants to shame people for not liking something.

I prefer a burger/sandwich to not have tomato on it. I don't have a problem with tomatoes, I like them, but I prefer a sandwich or burger to not have them.

If I went to your house and you made and assemble a BLT for me, I'd happily eat it, it would be rude of me to take it apart and throw out the tomato. But if I go to a restaurant, and the burger is brought out splayed out on the plate and I slide the tomato off to the side. No one needs to ask, "Don't like tomatoes?", or follow up with, "but you eat salsa? and Marinara? why did you take that tomato off your burger?" then finally "guess you're just a picky eater."

I think if someone asked you, 'don't like tomatoes,', if you took off a tomato, you should be OK with it, ( unless they said it with one of those sappy smile bullshit sarcasm grin deals ) but I can't tell you how to live.

fucking delicious (but quite chewy)

I get why people wouldn't like squishy seafood ( or gastropods ) even if done right.
Not only is there a specific/unique flavor to them, there's also a texture acquisition.

best seafood i ever had was raw octopus at a fish market in Japan

hella spongy/squishy, but unbeatable for flavor

Peas are OK if incorporated into a larger dish. No thanks by themselves

I may be the fattest pickiest eater on the planet.

Foods I don't eat off the top of my head...
Pasta/noodles
Fish/Seafood/sushi
Vegetables
Asian food
Nuts
Eggs (unless they are in a food such as waffles, pancakes, cakes, breads, etc.)
Grains (unless they are in bread)
Mexican Food (unless it is very basic - such as a taco)
Cheese (unless it's in pizza or on a meatball)
Soup (unless it's a simple broth)
