Re: What Makes A Salad
There's an entire podcast devoted to these culinary conundrums. Appropriately titled: a hot dog is a sandwich.

Re: What Makes A Salad
Well then the salad we ate today was not a salad according to that definition.
Because brussels, beets and salmon heated up would be fine.

Re: What Makes A Salad
Warm beets? Other than borscht that's a new one to me.
Re: What Makes A Salad
You've never eaten beets warm?
My rents ( mom ukranian ) would serve just beets cooked, and that was a side.
As opposed to just fresh beats.

Re: What Makes A Salad
I personally think that heating something up disqualifies it as a salad. I would take it a step further and say that, definitionally, a salad must be something cool-to-cold.
Re: What Makes A Salad
So warm potato salad is out for you.
Re: What Makes A Salad
German potato salad is not a salad. Warm potatoes are a side dish.
Re: What Makes A Salad
And i'm on bored.
When the BUD ordered the brussels, beets, salmon salad - i thought every single piece would have already been cooked and then cooled and served.
Instead, all three pieces were all cooked, hot, and served.
Not a salad for me.
That's why I came to kcrim for clarification.

Re: What Makes A Salad
I have almost exclusively eaten German potato salad cold--grew up in mostly German extended family.
I'm not sure how much temperature is a bright line. I am thinking there are warm western bean salads, and then you get into a ton of warm Asian vegetable salads.

Re: What Makes A Salad
I have had warm German potato 'salad'.
Served warm intentionally.
I don't think it's salad - but they got salad in the name.

Mrs 99 hits the water with a couple of shakes of the salt shaker and calls it salted. I usually cook the pasta.jfish26 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 3:18 pmSomething Mrs. Fish (of all people, in that she's Italian) never learned: salt the pasta water.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 3:06 pmSomething my mom never learned: finish the pasta in the sauce!
As to the original question, PhD pretty much nailed it. I think warm brussels sprouts, beats and salmon is probably a salad, bit it's pushing the definition.
I guess cole slaw is a salad too.
Defense. Rebounds.
Re: What Makes A Salad
My mom is famous for her German potatoe salad. It's a salad and it's fabulous.

When it comes to pasta water, I have always subscribed to the notion that it should taste like you unexpectedly took a big sea wave to the face.jhawks99 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 4:41 pmMrs 99 hits the water with a couple of shakes of the salt shaker and calls it salted.
