Looking like 20 million next season -- which isn't all that bad but he is getting up there in age.
Do we have 20 million we can commit to him?

On the other hand -- Mahomes and Hopkins?
Good god man.
Hopkins, Kelce, Toney and MVS with Pacheco in the backfield sounds good to me. We don't have that many years of elite Kelce left; let's not waste any of them.
Get Hopkins, draft a TE somewhat early to start the Kelce replacement and let Toney and Skyy work the intermediate game.
Hopkins and MVS lifting the coverage while Kelce, Toney and Clark carve opponents up underneath sounds like another really fun season of offense.

Cannot afford $20M for wide receivers. They are getting destroyed in the modern game so often they are usually out several games. Need three $6M guys. A 20 million signing means 4 Kemps.

"Need three $6M guys"

So like Demarcus Robinson, Jamison Crowder and TY Hilton.
Watch out world.

Guys who have a $6 million/year contract at WR next year:

33 year old washed up Julio Jones
34 year old never very good Marvin Jones
28 year old Braxton Berrios - I think I had heard of him before but not sure

Then there is Skyy, Toney, Watson, Fortson and draft picks. They already have MVS and Kelce on contract. Ju Ju is pretty affordable to get to that average salary. You throw $20M away for an injury prone receiver and we'll see who they can sign.

Would you trade Chris Jones for a mid 1st and a 4th and a 2nd next year?

Yes I think so. He’s about to cost a ton. Up there in age a bit for a DT. He was a 2nd round pick, so you can find his talent there.

That math I like.

I think Chris Jones will want another 4 year deal but this time with a 30 million dollar average value ( 4 years/120 ) - so right behind Aaron Donald with similar guarantees ( 45 million ).

If you knew you could get 2 years of this Chris Jones, I think you'd sign that.
But say Seattle offered their 20th overall and their 4th ( 120th ) this year and next years 2nd.
You might need to do that unfortunately.

I will admit to not at all understanding the Hopkins thing. Didn't the Chiefs JUST prove that they don't need to spend on WR?

It depends on the Hopkins thing.
He has said, so he can get outta there, he would be willing to re-negotiate a contract after a trade.
At the moment he's 19 million year one, 15 year two.

Say he wanted 3 years for 45, with 25 guaranteed.
Would you trade your 2023 2nd and a conditional, I dunno, 24 5th for that?

I personally would not. A 2nd is a guy who should be an early, solid starter. I'll take four years of that on a rookie contract, over what is mostly a luxury piece.

And one that gives off serious late-career-Julio-Jones vibes, to boot.

Our 2nd will be pretty late in the game.
We used our 2nd on Skyy Moore last season.
Hopkins > Moore. If healthy, he's Pro Bowl starter quality with Mahomes.

But Fish is right when it comes to that 2nd.
You could replace Thornhill with that 2nd. Or find offensive line help on the cheap.

Just please no RB's in the first 2 rounds.

Also, in other news, Adam Thielen was released today.
Will take.

Can I mention again how much I’d like to see Thielen in KC?

Could we sign him for 5 mill?

Would you rather:
A. Chiefs sign JuJu for 2 years 25 million, cap hit 12.5.
B. Trade their 2023 2nd and 24 5th for Hopkins who negotiated to 3 for 45, cap 15
or
C. Sign Lazard for 2 years 12 million and Thielen for 1 year 5 million, cap 11

Well if Robert Woods is signing a contract like that, Lazard is gonna take like 10 mill a year and JuJu 15.

The WR money makes sense on one level but is crazy on another. They can't stay healthy in a game where they are getting destroyed after the catch. The NFL really needs to fix that but won't. You need to spread money around that position or go big and hope for healthy guys. The 17 game season is a killer at that position.
