To be fair, Gates' actual point there is a pretty classic screwing up of causation vs correlation

That's actually true in animals, but that's a product of evolution - species in which lots of young ones die wouldn't survive without high fertility.

In humans both are more correlated (and more likely caused by) low income and education.

sure, but the point that didn’t get made well enough is that adequate nutrition and healthcare (with things like vaccines) tends to lead to fewer births…”poor” families don’t feel the need to hedge their bets by having “extra” kids because there’s a higher likelihood that they grow to adulthood
