The only "whiffs" we have in my opinion is when we recruit talented players and fail to keep them here long term. If elmarko leaves that would be example

If you look at what Self and his staff do with freshman we recruit that graduate here, it's pretty incredible.

So fuck the portal

How many talented players have we failed to keep long term but they went on to end up actually being good players?

Recent whiffs that come to mind:

Udeh
Zuby
Rice
Arterio
Yesufu
Pettiford
Timberlake
Marcus Adams Jr

And the entire 2021 class. You can't be Kansas and have no freshman in the top 50.

Quentin Grimes is the best recent example. But there plenty of guys who have left and had varying levels of success

That's not exactly a good thing that there aren't a bunch of examples. Where they were good recruits, but maybe just bad fits.

Why are they coming here in the first place. It's a problem to miss on so many guys.

I suppose Grimey counts.

As a whole tho I’m pretty sure anyone who transfers from KU thinking they’ll find greener pastures elsewhere, they rarely pan out

Is that supposed to be comforting? Or a positive thing?

It’s a positive thing that our coach has a track record of making non top 25 recruits become top 25 players in CBB, yes.

Self said on his radio show that hunter and mccullar are out for the big 12 tourney, but will play in the ncaa. Which is what most of us assumed

Probably not but do I consider them to be finding "greener pastures" elsewhere.
Not necessarily $ green, and not fame and playing for an elite program green, but playing time and contribution greener.

I know all of the kids listed were great HS players and recruited by legit programs. They had choices and chose KU. What did they think would happen? I refuse to believe Self sold them on lies. They knew they would have to compete and then they either quit on KU or Self quit on them.
I would never knock a kid for wanting to PLAY for Kansas but in today's NCAA Basketball world divorce is way too common and I think it's crap for ALL involved. I would much prefer - you commit, that's it. You don't leave unless your coach leaves. I also don't think it's cool for coaches to recruit kids and then all but kick them out the door because someone better comes along. Too easy for everyone to play the selfish bitch/asshole role. Then again, NCAA Basketball is a HUGE business. Who am I to say what I think is right and wrong - for others? What I do feel I have the right to say is that I feel it's time for a BIG change in regards to the rules.

you're not wrong.

Problem being, we just had a BIG couple changes in regards to the rules and they both went the wrong direction as far as I (and you seem to be based on this post) am concerned.
