Saying Gov. Ron DeSantis has followed the autocratic examples of governments in Russia and China, a group of mostly Republican former high-level government officials has called the Florida governor’s takeover of Disney World’s governing district “severely damaging to the political, social, and economic fabric of the State.”

The group of former governors, U.S. House members and presidential administration officials filed a “friend of the court” brief on Wednesday in Disney’s federal lawsuit against DeSantis and his appointees to the board of Disney World’s governing district. Disney’s lawsuit says the Republican governor violated the company’s free speech rights by taking over the district after Disney publicly opposed Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law, which banned classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades.

The group’s goal in filing the brief last week is to demonstrate “how the path the Governor has chosen is corrosive to the form of democracy envisioned by the Constitution, and to re-emphasize this Court’s critical constitutional role in curbing the excesses of governance by retaliation,” they said in a court filing.

Specifically, the group says that DeSantis’ actions harm Florida economically because firms are being dissuaded from doing business in Florida since they could be subject to the governor’s retaliatory whims if they ever voice disapproval over his policies. The group noted that Disney scrapped plans for a $1 billion campus in Orlando that would have relocated 2,000 employees from Southern California, following a year of attacks by DeSantis...

“The fact that Governor DeSantis has taken these anti-democratic actions so blatantly and brazenly — that he is proud of them — only makes them all the more damaging to the political and social fabric of Florida and the country as a whole,” they said...

I suppose threatening to arrest the people that actually build the houses and apartments Floridians want to live in creates scarcity, lessens supply, and makes my existing home more valuable - it's up over 100% in only 4 years, but I'm not selling. So, all that does is drive up my property taxes and insurance premiums, and increase the prices of nearly everything else because companies are unable to find the people, i.e., immigrants, necessary to run their business, pick their crops, roof the houses and repair the damage from last year's hurricane, do the landscaping, clean the hotel rooms and work in restaurants, etc., etc., so they have to pay higher wages which are passed on to us.

Instead, our fascist governor is busy "picking losers and winners" and using the government to go after companies that dare to disagree with him because republicans are all about "let business be business", don'tca' know? When he isn't promoting his Christo-Fascist agenda remaking our schools and rewriting history so his constituents feelings won't be hurt, he's busy grooming the next generation to impose its religious beliefs on the rest of us like any other "limited government", "conservative" republican would. Meanwhile, every time he's on camera he painfully reveals to America what an unlikable jerk he is, while gleefully chasing his dream to spread "Florida" to the rest of our nation.

Aren't we lucky.

Apologies if this is covered in another thread. Apparently the FREEDUMB! Governor wants parents to fill out a form on what name their kids should be addressed in school. They interviewed some parents and they are rightfully outraged about whether this is the best use of school resources.

Some of them are objecting to this by filling out joke names. Wonder if anyone said that their child should be addressed as Governor DeFascist or Governor DeathSantis and then sue the State if teachers refuse to say those names. If I lived in Florida and had a school aged child, I would

I went out to dinner with my daughter, her husband, and my 9 & 12 y/o, (newly 4th & 8th grade), granddaughters last night. School started Thursday. What you are describing is real. Under the new rules, Ron DeSantis would need to have a form signed by one of his parents if "Ron" is what he preferred to be called.

A new rule the parents like is that kids aren't allowed to use their cell phones on campus, and although it's somewhat vague because it doesn't directly impact her because they make the 12 y/o leave her phone at home already, kids have to "turn their phones in" when they get to school, and check them back out when they leave, if they understood it correctly.

Another rule the parents are hopeful about is: They have assigned seats in the cafeteria for lunch, and they are purposefully assigned so they won't be next to their usual cohort. Instead, they're assigned to tables (for weeks or semesters at a time) with people they aren't necessarily likely to have much in common with, and, from other grades. It's to promote people breaking out of their silos, and getting to know people they otherwise wouldn't, and to thereby tamp down bullying.

At least, that's what I heard at a noisy Capital Grille* table last night. Feel free to take it all with an appropriate amount of NaCl.

I don't have a big problem with kids not being allowed to use their phones at school although many schools run their scheduling through phone apps these days. Out HS students can see if teachers are available during their open mods and book those slots and go spend time working with a teacher on things they may be struggling with. But too much time is spent by students doing Snapchat and other stupid shit on their phones.

Assigned seats at lunch is corny but whatever. I worry that kids will be more likely to skip lunch and hang out elsewhere than to interact with randos and the last thing kids need is to be skipping meals during school. They are already too strung out over the course of the day. End of day classes would be a waste if they haven't eaten since 7am.

Columbia Restaurant Co., the seven-location Florida-based chain which was started in Tampa in 1905 by a Spanish-Cubans and is now run by the 4th and 5th generations of the family, is a well-known establishment where you can count on getting great food. It's known as an ace in the hole for taking visitors, because of its unique atmosphere and consistently excellent food.

When you consider how "limited government" republican, Gov DeSantis likes to "pick winners and losers" when it comes to public co.s and single out and punish any that don't conform to his "let business be business" ideological line, it takes guts to speak out.

Has anyone seen Bootsy?

Florida has the highest rate of inflation of any state in the US.

Move to Florida, he said...

Half of Miami's elected officials are under investigation.

Thanks, Biden!

- Commissioner republican Alex Diaz de la Portilla arrested for money laundering, bribery, criminal conspiracy.

- Mayor Francis Suarez, recent republican presidential candidate, target of FBI bribery investigation.

- Commissioner republican Joe Carollo ordered to pay $63.5 million for using city agencies to target businesses he didn’t like.
