Why It Seems Everything We Knew About the Global Economy Is

Post by ousdahl »

…No Longer True

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/18/busi ... china.html

While the world’s eyes were on the pandemic, China and the war in Ukraine, the paths to prosperity and shared interests have grown murkier.

(Dangit why does this gotta be behind a paywall)

Business ownership has been a solid path for wealth by those who can work hard. Still is. Monitor the changes in demand, young man.

if you take your vitamins and say your prayers and do your exercises and work hard and stay out of trouble you can be whatever you want to be in this great country. there are no limits. there are no boundaries.

the same cannot be said for most of the rest of the world. and i say the hell with most of the rest of the world. they are just riding our coattails anywho.

That's just flat out bullshit. The odds that you can be become "whatever you want" if you are born to two people from the inner city, one of whom is in prison for decades on a BS possession charge that a wealthy white person can get out of entirely thanks to being able to afford great legal representation (thanks to inheriting money from previous generations of ancestors who were actually legally allowed to own land and vote for their best interests) and a mother who falls into addiction due to the struggles of working three jobs to make ends meet because they cannot get enough government assistance (thanks to cushy suburbanites not wanting their tax dollars go to the mythical "welfare queens") while never being around to help her kid do well in their crappy, underfunded school are astronomically small.

Just because YOU could doesn't mean that everyone has the same opportunity. Just everyone raised LIKE YOU. So kindly fuck off with that cushy white bread bullshit.

There are a number of things we could do to make MICH’s post closer to reality.

Of course, they are not things that are spoken highly of on Fox.

Take, for example, universal Pre-K (or even preschool). One of many, many, many things that would truly make it possible, or at least more plausible, for people to move up the class ladder.

But, costing money and helping poor (and, disproportionately, not-white) people, you won't find much Fox support.

Universal Pre-K is just babysitting. Few kids are learning anything before the age of 5 or 6 that matter. Spend that money on making all of our elementary, middle and high schools better and then figure out how to supplement day care for those who need it. Keep giving kids free school lunches. Make education a more desirable career path (AKA more $$$) so that the bottom of the pool of young talent isn't choosing it as a career.

i think they’re learning plenty at that age, given the right environment

they may not be learning classic “school” sorts of things, but they’re definitely learning important social skills

It depends on the quality of the preschool, but the benefits of the socialization process alone is enormous. Kids who attend preschool learn how to learn, and start kindergarten ahead of kids who don't.

The benefits are greater for low-income children, perhaps because their homes don't accommodate, encourage, facilitate learning as well as higher income homes, and are especially beneficial for kids from dual-language homes.

My granddaughter is 4. She knows all of her numbers, letters and speaks fluent Spanish. Pretty good pre K start.

Anecdotal, I know. But more kids could benefit from something like this.
