I was hoping to meet, above all, DC and Gutter.

It really was awesome to meet some of the board members for the first time…and visit again with many of them that I have already met.

finally, after 4 creeks, hours of driving, miles of bouncing around forest roads, 2 plates of ribs plus tater salad, giant slice of chocolate flan, plus a green chili breakfast burrito from the gas station in Monte Vista since I slept in and missed the Sunflower cafe that morning...

...the moment you've all been waiting for...

you'll never guess why they call them a cutthroat.

trick question!

they actually get that name from their reputations as fiercely competitive businessmen.

jk lol they get the name from the bright orange/red slash under their jaw, duh.

The other distinctive feature relative to other trout is the spots that become bigger and more concentrated toward the tail.

and after we sat on Big Blue and talked about them the night before...bonus tiger trout for Japhy!

I get back, get the pleasure of finally meeting Dr. Pepper, and promptly screw up her name.

She and I are hungry, so Japhy refers us to what I initially think it's a food truck. Turns out, it's just some kind mujer serving to-go boxes of homemade quesabirrias off her front porch with a tent over it...even better!

for real so good I got another order for dinner.

Image

the best part is, we got the last semi-licit orders. the dude behind us in line was literally the health inspector shutting her down. he at least had the courtesy to let us receive our food first, before bringing down the ban hammer on that poor mujer. all moot anyway, cuz Japhy calls her and hooks up more now-total-outlaw quesabirrias for dinner anyway.

and shoot, I have lots more pictures. But it's late, I'm tired, gotta be up early, and despite having lots more pictures in losely-chronogical order, my memory of everything after this moment starts to get fuzzy. So I'm leaving you with this one for tonight.

And besides, this is the photo of the exact moment when the party gets completely crazy as fuck:

I appreciate it guys. The feeling is mutual. Bummed I wasn't there but God willing at some point in the not too distant future we will meet in person.
Not a single person on the boards I wouldn't want to meet - as long as we don't discuss politics.

Ousy - Nice pics! Is it bad that as much as I enjoy/ed them, there was no sexual gratification for me?

Wait, for some reason I thought the game was gonna be on some sort of drive in theater.

Am I just making that up in my mind?

That looks like a 42 inch TV. Wtf?!

that was my first thought, too
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

My guess ( and hope ) is that, since that was the first game, it was daytime and thus a projection on a drive inn theater would not work.

Next time we ask BofH for his plasma.

The TV is the 65 inch Sony in the Spud Lounge.

As you may recall the original idea was to have our crew rent out the entire Frontier and then we get the option to hire the projectionist to come in and show whatever we want on the big screen at the Drive-In. I was happy to pay for the projectionist, but with the cancellations, I was going to have to rent out the rest of the place myself to fill it and by the time you added in the projectionist it was more expensive than a pair of tickets to the Final Four. So we watched the night games in the Spud Lounge also. When everyone got up next morning after the Mizzoo game ( the Manhattan King was working his magic) I think you could have told half the attendees they watched the game at the Frontier and they would have believed you.

Next event I am thinking will be summer 2025. That will give Self some chances to win another Natty and win some other memorable games to add to list of game choices.

I might schedule it to coincide with the weekend of Solstice so you can take that festival in as well. That would add 2 days of Solstice parties in Bill's Big Party Garage onto the front or back end of the games. The Solstice falls on the weekend of June 20-21 in 2025. That is also right before the new moon so we will have a sliver of a waxing moon. The sky will be very dark with lots of stars visible. Mark your calendars now.

There are only 14 yurts and quonsets out there. Rent them all and we will watch the night games on the drive-in screen.

I will have my residence completed next to the Spud Lounge by then, so a bigger kitchen and a dishwasher so the "last supper" event won't be as cumbersome or makeshift as it was this year. Cooking dinner for 10 without an oven or a stovetop was a bit of a challenge, but we made it work. The sauce for the herb-chili encrusted pork might have been a little better with sherry than Boulevard BBQ beer in it, but not much. And much thanks to my tag team potato mashers, they pounded the spuds out real good.

In my case "cutthroat" IS a reference to my ruthless business nature.

A tiger trout is on my "to do" list. I have heard stories about that creek but haven't made the time to explore it yet. We will coordinate another trip Oussie and we will hit that place. If not this fall, then next summer.

The Frontier property is perfect for a large gathering.
Those of us that stayed there had access to the community kitchen/dining room.

It is a beautifully done interior, like a high end lounge…filled with top of the line ovens…stoves…coolers.

The bonus for a group gathering is that all of this, the REALLY well appointed guest rooms, a massive patio and a HUGE lawn in front of the movie screen combine to give you all that you could need for a gathering.

You would be hard pressed to find a better facility, better weather, and better people

Yeah, thanks everyone for making a sweet time happen. Shoulda said that sooner.

Overlander for the manhattans, feral for breakfast and being my new bff, Dr. P for the Pepsi, Defixione for the (redacted), Japhy for putting me up and feeding me and for making it all happen, all you guys…shit am I forgetting anyone? Been a wild couple days since getting back, I still need to post more pics.

And Japhy hell yes we should hit that place and soon. The tiger wasn’t even expected, just one of those things that only happens if you go.

Part of me wants to maybe even suggest a proper breakout session on a stream for next crimfest, if anyone else would be interested in joining for some sound business advice from some ruthless cutthroats off the grid.

A big thanks to everyone who came out to the Empire and soaked up the culture and hung out for the basketball. We will do it again, most likely in 2025. There will be more facilities completed by then and Erica will likely have her County Health Department permit for food. Those of you who didn't make it this year you have time to get your shit together for the next one.

I am kinda festivaled out, at least with regards to hosting/organizing events this year.

For those of you so inclined to visit, the next Solstice is June 21-22, 2024.

TMI time........

As I am sitting on the toilet shitting out a combo of Italian Beef and Sausage pizza and posting this........
Unless I get back on track in regards to taking care of myself, I would suggest people take the 3-2 odds I will not be alive in late July /early August of 2025.
If I am and am able to walk and talk, I will try my best to be there.

Made me look it up:

I'm very familiar with muffuletta, and had heard of giardiniera, but had no idea why it was germane.

Is giardiniera just a Chicago thing?

Giardiniera is an Italian relish of pickled vegetables in vinegar or oil.

While it is now a staple in Chicago, it migrated from Italy to Chicago with Italian immigrants during the mid-19th century. In doing so, Giardiniera has now become the oil-based topping that Chicago natives and visitors know and love.

Italian giardiniera is also called sottaceti ("under vinegar"), a common term for pickled foods. It is typically eaten as an antipasto or with salads.[4]

In the United States, giardiniera is commonly available in traditional or spicy varieties, and the latter is sometimes referred to as "hot mix".[citation needed]

Giardiniera is a versatile condiment that can be used on a variety of different foods, such as bratwurst, bruschetta, burgers, pasta salad, eggs (omelets), hot dogs, tuna salad, sandwiches, and much more.[citation needed] In the U.S. it is not uncommon to use giardiniera on pasta.[citation needed]

In the cuisine of Chicago, an oil-based giardiniera[5] is often used as a condiment, typically as a topping on Italian beef sandwiches,[6] subs, and pizza.[7]

A milder variety of giardiniera is used for the olive salad in the muffuletta sandwich.[8]

Ingredients
The Italian version includes bell peppers, celery, carrots, cauliflower and gherkins.[citation needed] The pickled vegetables are marinated in oil, red- or white-wine vinegar, herbs and spices.[citation needed]

Chicago-style giardiniera is commonly made spicy with sport peppers or chili flakes, along with a combination of assorted vegetables, including bell peppers, celery, carrots, cauliflower,[9] and sometimes gherkins or olives,[10] all marinated in vegetable oil, olive oil, soybean oil, or any combination of the three. Some commercially prepared versions are labeled "Chicago-style giardiniera".[11]...

I had a feeling my spelling was lacking bit I was too lazy to look it up.

Giardiniera and the olive tapenade in a muffuletta are different. I love em both.
