College and NBA teams routinely gamble on a player's perceived "talent". They can see that the potential is there but only a percentage of a people with that talent have the stars align and also put in the necessary work to translate that talent into ability and performance. For some, they don't reach their potential because they don't have the between the ears skills necessary to understand the things they need to do. Others get derailed by injuries at the worst time. Others get waylaid by people in their ear giving them bad advice.

The list of players out there who had the talent to be NBA All Stars is far longer than the list of players who developed into NBA All Stars.

He doesn't appear to be good enough relative to his available teammates to earn those minutes.
This.

I think he'd look basically like he does playing the minutes he's playing.

^^
Selby showed some decent stuff at the next level, but the injury bug got him.

Diallo just didn't end up being very good at the game of basketball, even though he was very athletic. Athletic ability does not always equal basketball ability.

He looks like a guy that would be getting Self yelled at by the majority of people here for playing him 30 minutes a game.

A lot of it depends on the individual. Rice is behind schedule because of injuries. Pettiford had setbacks because of injuries but he's starting to get it now. We've seen it both ways. We've seen young players improve during the course of the season. We've seen some who don't get it til year 2 or 3. We've seen some who never get it.

I trust a proven coaching staff to play who they need to play when they need to play them. Do the coaches make mistakes on this matter sometimes? Sure they do. They also get it right more often than not.

and this particular coaching staff gets it right more often than not
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

And sometimes on court performance isn't the reason for a players struggle to get PT.

Definitely not saying that is Rice, he has seemed to be an engaged teammate with positive attitude. But Self is building a culture, so more goes into it than just on court performance in certain situations. Thankfully we don't seem to get many of those guys here, and the problems seem to find the door sooner rather than later.

And fwiw, I'm more concerned about Udeh and his lack of PT than I am Rice.

Ditto. I was anticipating more from him at this point.

Bigs tend to come along a lot more slowly than guards/wings.

15 - Gradey Dick - Kansas, Freshman
Sharpshooting wing with playmaking skill that’ll make him more than just a specialist.

SHADES OF

Lava, fire, the sun

Catch-and-shoot Threat
Pull-up Threat
Feel for the Game
Hustle

PLUSES

Flawless shooting release with no wasted movement. He can hit any type of shot, whether it’s transition sprints that require him to stop dead in his tracks or handoffs in which he must turn and balance himself in midair. He’s in constant motion off the ball, making him the type of player who requires constant defensive attention.

He’s far more than a shooting specialist because he looks for opportunities to cut into the paint and can attack closeouts when covered behind the arc.

Good athlete with excellent body control and touch at the rim, finishing layups and floaters with either hand.

Talented playmaker who can hang in the air and still fire bull’s-eye passes to spot-up shooters or cutters. With such great vision, he’s a connective piece who will always keep the ball moving and make his teammates better.

Makes hustle plays by attacking the offensive boards for tip outs and putbacks.

High-effort defender. He’s willing to take a charge and always fights on the ball to try to compensate for his lean frame. He’s also a good help defender when making rotations or closing out on shooters.

MINUSES

Lacks the burst off his dribble to create space and get all the way to the basket. He’s more of a tough shotmaker.

Defensive liability at this stage of his career: He has a skinny frame and a lack of strength, and his subpar lateral quickness makes him a target even at the college level, so there will be no place for him to hide in the pros.

He'll get better. He does rebound his position well, tries to help out to get steals on double teams and is willing to scrap and dive for loose balls so he isn't a disaster on defense but he does get blown past here and there. 20 pounds of muscle and a few more years with a trainer to improve his technique will work.
