While I happen to agree that considerable inflation is inevitable, I am reminded that you're the guy who informed of us the "Major housing crash coming this winter or sooner" - that didn't happen.
Instead we are seeing things like this being written these days......

The housing crash is going to happen, it's just delayed because the government is holding it up. The forbearance, unemployment, etc. is what is keeping it propped up. Once the real economy has to be confronted, look out.

ousdahl wrote: Fri May 07, 2021 12:53 pm So PhD’s grandpa worked as a baker. He made 3 pies a day. He got to keep one pie a day for himself, plus save another half pie for his grandson. It was enough to live on, and to save up for retirement too.

Fast forward, now workers are expected to make 10 pies a day. They still only get paid a pie and a half, even tho the price of pies has gone up considerably. Business is good! For the oven owner, at least. And the dude who owns the oven didn’t even pay for it, he got the gummint to do that for him.

Phd is arguing that the other 8 and a half pies a day should go not to the guy baking them, but to the guy who owns the oven, so he can take his yacht to the Caribbean where he hoards his pies, while the baker himself wonders if he should use his pie and a half to pay rent or to buy groceries.
Now who's putting words in whose mouth? Choke on this cherry while I respond.

If you used to get 1 pie, for making 3, and the technology improved, I'd fight for the employee to still be compensated similarly, lets pay him 3 pies for making 10. That's good for everyone, he's making 3X as much as he used to, and yes, he produces more, but with fancy rolling pins and mixers, it's a lot easier. Now you'll notice that leaves 7 pies for the company owner, he went from 2 pies per employee, to 7...but I'm ok with that increase since it's his business AND he invested in the new mixers and rolling pins that increased productivity and he pays the electricity and advertising.

In my scenario, both are doing better than before.

Yes, the owner makes more, but he invested more and it's his pie shop. Yes, the gummint subsidized his oven, but he also used gummint money to avoid a furlough in the winter, and now he's paying back that loan. If the increased pie revenue to the owner incentivizes the employee to open his own donut shop, that's a win for everyone.

I think everyone should get a fair piece of the pie, not necessarily the same amount though.

A fair piece of the pie sounds like radical socialist talk.

Welcome back, comrade!

When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.
Just musing now, but - this is quite the privilege. If you feel you’ve achieved this, good for you! No really.

I wonder how many people really get this chance. Or rather, I wonder how many people must forego this chance cuz they are economically pressured to pursue whatever pays the best instead. Or cuz they have to settle for whatever pays at all

Not everyone has the economic mobility to go change careers, or to pursue the career they desired all along.

But - could we ever get there? Could we ever achieve an economy and a society in which we are more able to pursue our full human potential, and less pressured to have to maintain basic survival?

This is true.

But there are also a lot of people who could change careers, but don't realize it, or could, but aren't willing to make the sacrifices to make it happen, or aren't willing to work hard enough to make it happen.

And, I know your thing is that our society puts people in these pickels and keeps them there...and I'll concede that does exist for some, but man there are a lot of people who also got into that picke, sometimes repeatedly, by doing some dumb, lazy, short-sighted shit.

Let's put people in better spots to succeed, but let's also not ignore the role personal responsibility plays in the equation either.

My last job was my dream job. It was what I wanted to do since I was a teen. Then my wife and I moved to Omaha, had a baby and our $5,000 per person deductible health insurance plan raised their rates to more than our mortgage so I quit my dream job, went to college and got a job with real benefits.

Now I just love the stability my job provides.

And to address your first point, I do have a job I genuinely enjoy. Not 100%, but I like 90% of what I do.

Here's the thing, though about a good job. Other people want them, the people who have them don't give them up, you have to work your ass off and pay your dues to get them.

That's the thing about a parent wanting their kid to be a physician. Well, Timmy's gonna have to get damn near a 4.0 in college, likely in a science major where there's less grade inflation, and he's probably going to need to volunteer 10-20 hours per week, have a part time job, do a research project, be active socially at school, get a high MCAT score, then to got to another 4-8 years of college, not sleeping much, putting off social life, putting off early career earnings, maybe taking out loans, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Then when Timmy is 40 and making a nice living, we all go, must be nice, wish I was a physician. Ignoring all the bullshit he went through to get the "good job".

So in my case I don't feel like it's privelage at all. I put up with a lot of bullshit, took a lot of shitty jobs, was in some cases treated like shit, paid insultingly low wages, worked stupidly long hours, to get there. I didn't do it alone, I caught some breaks along the way, but I'm happy now because I put in the work then.

You can definitely change. I was a broke-ass kid some years back. I changed my attitude, and just last week, deposited $80,000 into one of my checking accounts. Good things can happen if you keep yourself open and don't hold a victim mentality.
