Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
I am going to ask one question a day. Please feel free to ask your own trivia questions on/in this thread.
7/14/21
This former Jayhawk was selected in the 4th round of the 1986 NBA Draft. I don't believe he ever played in an NBA game but he played 2 years in France and several years in Israel. While playing professionally in France he scored 56 points in one game and 57 points in another. He is currently a head coach and GM of a professional basketball team. Who is this former Jayhawk?

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
Probably going to be some minor league bullshit on the HC and GM combo.
“I don’t remember anything he said, but it was a very memorable speech.” Julian Wright on a speech Michael Jordan gave to a group he was in
"But don’t ever get it twisted, it’s Rock Chalk forever." MG

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
I should know but I don't ( without looking it up ).
I don't know teams before 88 really - but I do know good players.
Guessing the 2nd or 3rd best player on the 85 team.

Q: How are a Self-era KU guard, a long-time MLB pitcher and an active NFL MVP linked?
(probably far too easy, to anyone here at least)

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
86 had to either be Calvin Thompson or Ron Kellogg and I knew Kellogg didn't play in Europe because he now lives here in Omaha near us. I read interviews with Kellogg as his kid went through our high school and then played football for the Huskers. Glad to see I backed my way into the right answer.
Anything earlier than 86 and it will have to be a major name for me to get it.

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
Calvin would have been my guess. Dude was fun to watch.
Defense. Rebounds.
Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
The video doesn’t play. Was it the game in the 83-84 season vs OU to send the game to OT? Also the very first alley-oop I saw in person was Turgeon to Calvin. I was sitting near a bunch of people who went to the same high school and they would all yell “pony” - guess that was his nickname in HS

The video should play if you click on the "Watch on YouTube" option. Bummer if it doesn't.zsn wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 6:57 pm The video doesn’t play. It is the full KU/MSU Sweet 16 game at Kemper in 86. Pony was in beast mode.
I believe Calvin got the nickname Pony because his father's nickname was Horse. No, his father is/was not Carl Henry.
One of my favorite Larry Brown mannerisms was when he would give the thumbs up to the players on the floor and you knew LB was calling for the "Calleyoop".

Question for 7/15/21
I'll give a lot of hints so hopefully you can figure it out.
Legend has it that Larry Brown offered this guy a scholarship without ever seeing him play Basketball in person.
This former KU Basketball player was allegedly/supposedly called by Larry Brown - "the best player in the country under 6 feet tall".
This player was known behind the scenes to struggle academically but somehow managed to stay eligible.
His college roommate at the Towers was from the same hometown as him and they were both known to like to get "full".
Back in 2019 Bill Self said this about the player - "_____ probably was the best non-shooting player I've ever been around."
This former player was NOT drafted in the NBA but can boast that he played a grand total of 1 credited minute in the NBA.
Who is/was this player?
Bonus question I have asked before and it's an excellent one to ask to win a bar bet.
Who is the leading scorer in University of Kansas Basketball history?

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
There’s only one player in the LB era under 6’ that I know of, and it was Cedric. Couldn’t shoot FT and also had some academic difficulties which led to opportunities for Turge.
Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
yeah I give up.
How are they linked?!?!!!

Re: Obscure Kansas Basketball Trivia
Isn't it the Elijah Johnson, LaTroy Hawkins and Patrick Mahomes II connection.
Like LaTroy Hawkins was godfather for both or something like that..?

What Self-era forward and multiple MLB All Star went (together) to the same ~1,500 student high school in Big 12 country?
